Only the stories that are popular tend to be pirated, which means people are already purchasing them. I think I read somewhere that over 100k novels are published yearly and each novel is competing for people's attention, interest, and money.
I think people like to blame pirates because they don't understand how their story isn't selling as much as they hoped it would.
I don't even read published novels anymore because I read fanfiction instead. Ebooks priced at $10.00 dollars is probably killing sales more than anything else.

I use my library to read popular/expensive books that I cannot afford. I use Kindle Unlimited so that I can read a lot of cheap books legally. If an author I have read a series by and liked has another series that is not Kindle Unlimited, I won't pay for it or read it. I can't afford to and there are so many options out there that I can read. Plus, I could easily get burned. Before getting into the current series I'm reading, I had five books that I couldn't get more than halfway into because, despite the reviews, they were awful. If I had to pay $3 (the usual price I see) or even just $1 per book, I wouldn't do it, because that would add up quickly and I would hate to spend money on a book I hated so much I couldn't finish.
And even limiting what I read to KU, there are still so many books to filter through. I am only barely scratching the surface with what I read, and often it limits to recs based on authors I already like. I can't even imagine trying to get a book noticed and purchased enough to make a living. And I would think most of the difficulty in doing so is getting noticed and getting people to try the book, not people pirating books. That seems like it would be way more of an issue for established/popular authors. Not that I condone it. I just think most of the people who say that pirates are why they aren't making a lot of money off their books are incorrect and other issues are much more likely. There is literally so much out there competing for limited funds.
