Mine was 2003 when my family got evicted from their apartment on Dec 1 and we had to scramble to find a place to live. We found a dumpy apartment on Dec 20 and spent our Christmas day moving in. If that didn't suck enough balls, I came down with a severe case of the flu and could barely stand up the morning of the move, but I had to help because it was a literal rush to get out with our stuff.

All our money for gifts and stuff got wiped out by the move. We couldn't even afford dinner. All because the owner of our property sold it and couldn't wait till after the holidays to kick us out even though there was zero rush.

The cherry on top was family back east who knew of our situation still calling and demanding I tell them why we hadn't sent them gifts. Well guess who got cut off my gift list after that?

Thankfully I haven't had a worse Christmas than that one.

2016, first Christmas without my dad.

Yours beats mine be a long shot. Mine's just the one most people get eventually - first Christmas after dead parent.

1988, I think. My brother threatened to hit my mother and my father said if he got her or threatened her again, he'd have him committed to the nut house. Pretty much ruined Christmas.

Not sure I want to say what mine was, it involved the death of a celebrity whom I love but who isn't very popular here.

Probably when my older sister and one of her exes got drunk on some wine my mom got and got into a fight in the house, breaking a lot of stuff including the wine bottle in the process.

There was never any wine in the house again after that.

Mine won't even compare to yours but a few years back, I got a really bad flu or cold and basically spent all of Christmas day and most of Boxing Day asleep. Couldn't even enjoy Christmas dinner because I couldn't taste anything and it was all bleh to me.

That happened to me - I think I was seven. Many years later my elder sister was a total "mean girl" to me about it, as if I'd decided to be ill to spoil everyone's fun. I was too surprised even to say, "Wow."

Probably the one after my grandmother died. She died the week after Thanksgiving.

Well last year, the guy I'd been with for 4 years, living with for almost 3, and thought I was gonna marry someday told me 4 days before Christmas that he thought we should break up because he didn't know what he wanted to do with his life and when he thought about being married to me he just felt regret. So last year was probably the worst I've ever had and I'm already starting to feel the breakup "anniversary" blues, being as I am still completely in love with him, so I'm not all that confident this year will be that great either.

Luckily I don't think we've ever had a truly terrible Christmas? I think the worst was when I was in 2010 I was in California for vacation, suppose to come back a few days before Christmas when I get a call from my parents that my Grandma had had a stroke and they had to rush to England.

Since I had flown out of Buffalo, I was going to have to get a bus from Buffalo to Niagara so that my brother could pick me up since he didn't have an active passport to cross the boarder and get me from the airport.

Then there was a storm and my flight got cancelled, I had to get a new one last minute for about $1000+ so I decided to just fly directly into Toronto, get an airport bus home, where I had to wait on the porch for my (at the time) sister in law to bring over keys and let me in since I hadn't taken my house keys with me.

My Grandma actually passed away just before they got there, she never woke up, and my parents ended up not getting home until Christmas Eve.

Probably 2014, my dad decided I was a huge liar because of one miscommunication, my mom got furious with me for using my phone while she was watching a movie (it was on silent and not in her sight line/all the lights in the house were on anyways AND my brother and dad were literally talking the whole time), and then my parents both screamed horrible shit at me and pinned me down so I couldn't leave. Then they said they were going to lie to get me involuntarily committed, which only didn't happen bc my family was having a party the next day and it would've been awkward to explain.

Also 2015, when my dad screamed in my face and tried to hit me bc I didn't agree with his answer to a factual question and then another relative felt me up, all while we were mourning my favorite relative.

Last year I said something dumb that I shouldn't have said and almost got kicked out of the house for it.

This year I'll barely be home bc everyone behaved so appallingly at Thanksgiving, including calling my fiancé the c-word and white trash, forcing me to prove a friend had really died bc apparently I was just lying about that??? (I wasn't), and following me around making fun of the idea that my brother disclosing my sexual assault without my permission might upset me ("Your brother was triggered, because you're around." "Well, I was also not feeling great." "Oh, you were triggered? Because of the rape? Why do you always ruin everything?")

You know what, fuck Christmas.

Probably last year. My mom hadn’t been home for her birthday, Halloween, or Thanksgiving, because she was in the hospital—twice she’d been drinking and hit her head and once she was detoxing—but she got kicked out of her board and care for drinking right before Christmas, freaked out that she hadn’t bought presents or cleaned house.

I bought a tree, presents, cooked... and she got drunk, of course. Two days later I came home from work and she went back in the hospital because she was drunk and had hit her head again, except this time it wasn’t just a nasty goose egg and possible concussion—everything in the house was covered in blood, even the Christmas tree and all the ornaments. I was still finding clotted blood in weird places months later. I still remember one of the paramedics going “wow that’s a lot of blood, how is she still talking?” And then one came into the living room and saw the tree and went “oh Jesus, how is she still alive?”

This year’ll be my first Christmas as an orphan.

That sounds like a good reason to just nope out of Christmas for a few years.

Probably the year mom was pissed because I refused to step foot in her house for Christmas unless everyone was sober. Lied to me about people's sobriety, I came over day before Christmas Eve, walked in on alcoholic relatives sitting on the couch surrounded by empties, walked right back out.

The next bit is pieced together from what I know of her and the situation, but the only concrete fact is one of the alcoholic relatives jumped off the roof and nearly died. My speculation is that mom talked said alcoholic relative into jumping, because she had a habit of that. Not usually that dramatic, but she loved to do stuff like wait until someone was drugged or drunk and then convince them someone else had been talking shit about them so they'd go try to beat their ass. Mom was a fucked up narcissist.

So that Christmas was mom having hysterics outside the ICU.

Mine was just an ear ache when I was a kid, but this thread's making me wish I could give each and everyone of you a big hug and sit you on the couch with a warm blanket and a cup of hot chocolate. I hope you all have nice Christmases from now on.

Honestly, there's a bunch of different Christmases that all run together with the general theme of "My dad was being a dick".

xmas with an ex. it was a white trash black comedy with a dad with a heart condition who didn't speak to anyone and was bouncing his payroll checks to his workers. a mom with her lesbian lover sorta on the down low but everyone knew and painfully didn't speak about it. and we were fighting the entire time. i just got dumped by a friend who pulled a nice guy (tm) snit because another friend snogged me while drunk.

I can't imagine it won't be this year. I got dumped by my "fiancé" and my brother is getting a divorce, so the family is going to feel dramatically smaller this year.

OP, your worst year sounds terrible. I've done the thing of having to move out in a hurry when I'm feeling sick, but over the holidays would suuuck.

The first Christmas we had after my mother split was tough, if only because I could see my dad physically straining to make it a happy joyous time when we all felt like shit.

I did have a Christmas dampened by a friend (who knew full well I was having a get together with family) decided to text me about how much one of his friends hated me and was badmouthing me to his parents at his Christmas dinner because I was encouraging his alcohol problem by going for drinks with him regularly. A problem that I had absolutely zero knowledge of and he had never mentioned to me. So I ended the night knowing that a girl I barely knew hated my guts and wanted to kick me in the face next time she saw me.

I replied with my own tale of woe already, but seriously your ex-landlord sounds like a real Scrooge. What nasty bullshit. Also damn, your no-longer-on-your-gift-list family need some priorities, not to mention some empathy.

My worst Christmas isn't anywhere near as bad as some of yours!

I was in boot camp. I was eighteen, away from home for the first time, and, well, it was boot camp.

And then we all went somewhere on the base (I don't remember, exactly) but they were playing Christmas music. "I'll be home for Christmas" came on, and the whole place was full of bawling recruits.

My grandmother died of cancer on, I think it was the 21st? So we had her funeral on the 23rd of December, which you might imagine put a dampner on things.

The one where I spent hours and hours stuck in traffic while trying to drive north out of San Francisco from the airport. It seriously took at least an hour to drive 7 blocks between Golden Gate Park and the Presidio.

All things considered, it wasn't a terrible time compared to some of the stuff posted here, but I don't know what the heck possessed everyone in San Francisco to get in their cars and drive towards the Golden Gate Bridge or Marin or wherever they were going on Christmas day. Also, it's just not Christmas if there isn't dirty slush stuck to your car.
