It can get pretty cringy when TPTB get involved with fandom.

Ugh, yes.

GOD same. I watch the talking dead and every time they talk about shipping I'm just like NOOOOO STOP.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-30 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I don't mind the creators/actors talking about fannish stuff if they're respectful of it, and don't make silly generalizations about things or act like they understand more than they do about it.

Like, if the creator is comfortable with the fact that lots of people ship their male leads together, and they can talk about the shippers with affection, that I can appreciate.

Unfortunately, few creators are very open-minded about fandom, and especially not about slashiness.

So many creators seem to have this strange, belittling, low-key resentful attitude towards fandom, and that really pisses me off.

This more than anything is what put me off Sherlock's creators.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-30 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT

Lol, Sherlock was literally the first fandom I had in mind when I was writing my comment. Between the actors' often insensitive comments, and all the creators' BS, including all their awful, mocking "fan service," that show left me feeling genuinely a bit sour towards the people involved. :/

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2017-11-30 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
Well, to be fair, Sherlock seemed to have a large number of stans who were making unreasonable demands of the creative team. Which I think is a big change in fandom lately, mostly driven on the fannish side. 25 years ago, few people doing fanfic or RP had any expectations that creators would do much more than give you a indulgent smile and an autograph.

THIS. You don't have to agree with it, but don't be derogatory to the people who put that check in your pocket.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-30 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
MTE. And honestly, how hard is it to come up with a basic, neutral answer to give when interviewers throw questions about fanworks at you?

Right? Show finally got it right. They basically say 'that's not 'our' vision, but that's your vision, and it's okay'.
(Show = Supernatural)

This forever. I want fandom to stay faaaaar away from the cast and crew, okay. Let's never talk about it.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-30 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Same. :(

(Anonymous) 2017-11-30 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
chime in for the Voltron fandom and ugh. Yes. Please stop the cast from coming up with ship names and getting into arguments with fan brats on tumblr and the writers giving interviews at cons where they say something that sets the fan base in a tizzy and than refuse to correct or address it - I'm looking at the age argument here. Just - stop the interaction with the fanbase all together. As a sane fan that keeps boundaries I'd gladly give it up if it would stop encouraging the crazies. Let me have my meta, enjoy my show, watch a panel or two at a con and leave it at that.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-30 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
That's not what the fourth wall is. Not unless they're using ship names in the show itself.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-30 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
Welcome to Supernatural, you won't enjoy your stay.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-30 07:55 am (UTC)(link)
I thought of Supernatural too.
I always find the fourth wall in that too weird and cringy.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2017-11-30 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this. TPTB have always been involved with fandom. It's called "marketing." It's only breaking the fourth wall if you're writing call-outs into the script.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-30 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a good point. I actually agree with the op about true fourth wall breaking. I basically always dislike it. But when it's just the creators addressing fans and fandom on theirthe own time, I regard that asyou pretty normal, andand only dislike it if they're derisive of the fans.

Came here to say this.

Meta isn't the Fourth Wall.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-30 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah... I don't know if it's because I've been in fandom long enough to remember when you absolutely did NOT want creators to take notice of your kinda illegal fanfiction and whatnot, but I don't want that, either.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-30 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
Oh don't worry I've been in fandom long enough to remember that too. And to have a list of creator names that don't take kindly to fanfic in the homepage of fic hosting sites so you know which line in the sand to avoid.

I still prefer those days to the mutual sycophancy that we have now.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-30 09:26 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, same. Even when TPTB are really, really, really nice, like Bryan Fuller was with the fannibals, it's just... too much for me. I don't like that kind of attention, and I don't like what it does to fandoms.

I'd never been all that into megafandoms to begin with, but these days I keep out of them entirely.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-30 10:50 am (UTC)(link)
I sort of wonder if this was inspired by a general fs comment?

Anyway I agree. I think it encourages fandom toxicity too. It's like it adds another very chaotic level for fans to obsess about. Before there was canon, canon compliant, and non-canon, and that was it. And it always seemed like the canon and canon compliant sections of fandom got the most toxically obsessed about winning.

Now there's PTB Approval to obsess over and shit like this is just going to get more and more common. https://io9.gizmodo.com/steven-universe-artist-quits-twitter-over-fan-harassmen-1785242762

When it comes to ship wars there's just no good way for the people in charge to post something pro one ship that's not going to be seen as an attack on other ships, that's not going to be used as ammunition in a fight over who had the purest and bestest ship in the fandom.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-30 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It feels a bit like an older person trying to be hip and talking to The Youth of Today in "their language" without really understanding what they are saying or how teenagers will never see them as hip no matter how many times they say "Yo!"

The flip side is that I think it gives some fans the feeling that they can make a show/movie series/whatever go the way they want, that their ship might become canon, that they are right to attack fans who disagree with them about anything or ship a rival ship, and other nastiness.
