There is no way the show won't be disappointing. They're not going to have the budget of a big movie so it's going to cut corners in places. There will be shoddy CGI and the like. I wouldn't expect anything else.

I'm more concerned about the writing. I love Tolkien but I hate all 6 movies. I am open to trying this if they make their own new characters and explore an under-explored area of the book (like the Dunedain or Gondor politics) but I'm anticipating that it will be mostly a cash-grab. Even if I don't like the movies, I will not deny that LOTR was an honest attempt at a good adaptation. I just feel the film makers didn't really understand the books.

I don't think there's going to be anything like that for the show.
