Also... it will be absolutely IMPOSSIBLE not to compare the show to the films. I can just see myself sitting there the entire time going, "What's the point?"

Aren't they doing original stories in Tolkein's world set between The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings? That's what I last heard, rather than a straight adaptation.

I think so. My best guess is something based on Aragorn's adventures prior to the main events of LOTR. So something that wasn't actually shown in the books.

(I guess I could live with that... it would kinda be like a televised fanfic. But I'd still prefer it to be done well, and I'm not sure that will happen with the stuff about making it like GOT)

I wish that they'd so the Silmarillion (spelling?) instead. From seeing secrets here on F!S it seems like that would be interesting in and of itself, and also not retreading ground that's already been tramped.

They can't for legal reasons.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-01 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
didn't Christopher give up the rights to the entire estate last week?

(Anonymous) 2017-12-01 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
No, he resigned from the Board of Directors. His sister and wife are still on it. The rights are still held by the Estate.

Yeah.

The Game Of Thrones comparison made me go from kind of excited to totally unexcited. It's going to suck. "Make it like Game of Thrones" is like the worst imaginable concept for a LOTR adaptation.

There is no way the show won't be disappointing. They're not going to have the budget of a big movie so it's going to cut corners in places. There will be shoddy CGI and the like. I wouldn't expect anything else.

I'm more concerned about the writing. I love Tolkien but I hate all 6 movies. I am open to trying this if they make their own new characters and explore an under-explored area of the book (like the Dunedain or Gondor politics) but I'm anticipating that it will be mostly a cash-grab. Even if I don't like the movies, I will not deny that LOTR was an honest attempt at a good adaptation. I just feel the film makers didn't really understand the books.

I don't think there's going to be anything like that for the show.

I was under the idea that this would be a prequel (pre-Fellowship of the Ring) series. So they're not re-doing the films.

I think they're aiming for the scope of GOT and it kind of has to be somewhat off-script.

Given what they seem to be going for: 'Set in Middle Earth, the television adaptation will explore new storylines preceding Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring. I hear that there are some creative restrictions imposed by the rights holders on what can be done and what can’t be done in a LOTR TV series.'

According to this article: http://deadline.com/2017/11/amazon-the-lord-of-the-rings-tv-series-multi-season-commitment-1202207065/ (Honestly, though, wtf Amazon? $250 million for just the rights?)

bad wigs, CGI orcs and a hack job done on the characters

That's already been done by Jackson.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-01 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
As sub par as the Hobbit movies were, they were still better at special effects than Game of Thrones, sorry.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-01 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
Even the battle scene where Legolas is Mario-jumping rocks? Really?

(Anonymous) 2017-12-01 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
But I thought most book fans disliked the movies

(Anonymous) 2017-12-01 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
I think there's a bit of selection bias there?

People who like both the books and movies probably don't go out of their way to identify as "book fans"

Cosigned. I'm still annoyed by the Hobbit adaptation.

Game of Thrones has such grim undertones, while Lord of the Rings is mostly hopeful. I'd hope they wouldn't try to grim it up.

Look on the bright side. As long as they exert at least Nick Jr. levels of effort, the CGI will be better than what was in the Hobbit.
