It is very good Star Trek and I think that it's strongly worth watching. Although you do have to keep in mind that 90s Star Trek is inevitably going to feel kind of old-fashioned and stage-y at times. And I would also strongly recommend being fairly aggressive about skipping episodes, especially in the first two seasons - it takes a while to come into its own and there's a lot of stuff that's frankly basically just filler.

But it's a really great show, the characterization and plots are amazing, probably my personal favorite Trek show. I haven't really watched Disco past the first couple episodes so I can't speak to how it compares there, but I do recommend it.

I'll keep the episode-skipping in mind, thank you! Well-written characters are pretty important for me when it comes to sticking with a show for a long time, and the characters in the episodes I watched seemed interesting, but any depth they had was totally lost on me because I was coming in, like, near the end of the show and didn't know anything about them. So that's good to know, anyway!

One of the things that stuck with me is that I probably (hopefully) got the worst first impression of that Doctor guy? The second episode I watched was the one where he helps some catatonic girl and then this doctor, like, immediately pressures his patient into a relationship with him, which was overwhelmingly creepy, and I've got to assume he's not usually like that? Or maybe it's less disturbing in context? I really can't say.

Yeah, Bashir's character sucks a bunch early on - IMO he gets a lot better.

Bashir was odd a bit early on. They had trouble writing him. But Kira was great right from the start, as was Dax.
