Okay, so, for someone who just got caught up with Star Trek Discovery and liked what I've seen of TOS (my sister is a huge fan of it, so I've sort of half-watched most of the episodes with her), is Deep Space 9 worth watching?

I accidentally watched a couple random episodes the other day (there was a marathon), and... tbh, they were pretty cute. Super corny, and I didn't know who most of the characters/races were so I had no idea what was going on half the time, but it was also just endearing enough to not turn the channel.

But I mean, seven seasons is kind of a lot & I've honestly got no idea if it's worth it, partially because I'm definitely not interested in watching the Next Generation to fill in any blanks in the canon (since I know they at least share some characters?). So, basically, is it one of the "good" Star Treks, or?

It is very good Star Trek and I think that it's strongly worth watching. Although you do have to keep in mind that 90s Star Trek is inevitably going to feel kind of old-fashioned and stage-y at times. And I would also strongly recommend being fairly aggressive about skipping episodes, especially in the first two seasons - it takes a while to come into its own and there's a lot of stuff that's frankly basically just filler.

But it's a really great show, the characterization and plots are amazing, probably my personal favorite Trek show. I haven't really watched Disco past the first couple episodes so I can't speak to how it compares there, but I do recommend it.

I'll keep the episode-skipping in mind, thank you! Well-written characters are pretty important for me when it comes to sticking with a show for a long time, and the characters in the episodes I watched seemed interesting, but any depth they had was totally lost on me because I was coming in, like, near the end of the show and didn't know anything about them. So that's good to know, anyway!

One of the things that stuck with me is that I probably (hopefully) got the worst first impression of that Doctor guy? The second episode I watched was the one where he helps some catatonic girl and then this doctor, like, immediately pressures his patient into a relationship with him, which was overwhelmingly creepy, and I've got to assume he's not usually like that? Or maybe it's less disturbing in context? I really can't say.

Yeah, Bashir's character sucks a bunch early on - IMO he gets a lot better.

Bashir was odd a bit early on. They had trouble writing him. But Kira was great right from the start, as was Dax.

TOS and DS9 are my two absolute favourite Treks (though I haven't seen Disco yet, so I don't know how either would compare to that). However, they're my favourites for rather different reasons. DS9 is a bit different in tone to a lot of Trek. It's a bit darker, it's set in a fixed location instead of on an exploration ship, it's heavily involved in long term diplomacy and conflict, it deals with a lot of the darker undersides of the Federation/galaxy that a lot of other Treks don't, and it's generally a good bit more morally ambiguous. So, I mean, if you like it as a Trek show probably depends on how fond you are of any of that. It's also probably a bit more story-arc heavy than many of the shows, since the fixed location allows more long term plots. Also, it came out around the same time as Babylon 5 and they took some influence from each other.

All that being said, it's NOT grimdark, it has some incredibly awesome storylines, it does still have a lot of the standard Trek wackiness (holodecks, time travel, mirror universes), the characters are amazing, and while it does dig into the darker elements of the Federation and its neighbours it's still a baseline optimistic show. It's my favourite Trek along with TOS, which might seem odd, but DS9 feels like the perfect counterweight, adding ambiguity without sinking the whole universe into grimdark.

I don't mind darker tones at all, and I honestly usually do prefer multi-episode/season-wide story arcs to single-episode stories, so those are definitely good things to know about DS9, thanks!

I'm pretty new to sci-fi in general, so I've never actually watched Babylon 5, or Battlestar Galactica, or even Star Wars, honestly, but I genuinely do like the genre, so it feel like I might end up enjoying DS9 a lot.

I haven't watched DS9 in years, but I remember it quite fondly, and I was obsessed with it when it was airing. I really liked a lot of the characters and was interested in their arcs and complexity.

You should go for it, but if you run into an episode that you don't like, don't be afraid to skip to the next one. Seven seasons of 20+ episodes is a lot of TV, and they weren't all going to be gold. You can always go back to what you skipped later.

It's arguably the best of the TNG-era series, although skimming or skipping the last season is advisable.

Speaking as somebody who spent six months this year rewatching every episode...yes, give it a shot. DS9 has amazing characters and supporting characters, and can get complex and dark without going too far. The phrase I used a lot in my reviews was "grey morality" and if you like that sort of thing, then you'll probably enjoy yourself. Also, with a few small exceptions, you don't really need to watch TNG to know what's going on, so you don't have to worry on that score.

That being said, I agree with other commenters that you might want to pick and choose the episodes you watch in seasons one and two, because it did take the show awhile to find its footing. But I'd highly recommend not skipping "Past Prologue", the episode after the pilot, because it's both a very solid story and introduces one of my all time favorite supporting characters. That alone is worth the price of admission.

Hope you give it a shot, and if you do, that you enjoy it!

Yes, definitely. And you probably don't need to watch TNG (Though I love TNG!) to 'fill in the blanks' so to speak on the couple of characters both shows share, as DS9 does a pretty good job of explaining who those characters are and their pasts.

I never liked it largely due to the fact that I find most of the characters very unlikeable but I'm very aware a lot of other Trekkers don't feel that way.
