That doesn't really seem like a particularly apt comparison? Like, those two situations just don't seem very similar at all? unless I'm missing something

In some cases it does, like the way Sailor Moon was dubbed for us so that they were cousins, totally cousins. Just cousins.

On that topic....they did a hilariously bad job at 'cutting out the gay' in the 90s dub. Instead of just gay they were incestuously gay.

I think it's probably that both are situations where things got censored in the translation.

I guess I didn't put together that the reason people didn't recognize gay themes was specifically because of translations?

I'm also not sure how much that's universally true tbh

Censored ,ought be too strong of a word for at least some instances. But nuances in language are definitely lost and that could lead to the same result.

You're missing the fact that in both cases, the translators may have edited out content they don't consider "child friendly".

You and OP both are missing the fact that a lot of social themes hinge on cultural frame of reference, so something that's pretty obvious to people raised in the culture that shaped the original work may be obscure to someone whose frame of reference is entirely different.

I think this calls for an actual analysis of what OP considers "textually gay" characters and situations in their native language and why we from other cultures completely missed that text. I'd love to know what we're missing and why. Not sarcasm, I really would.
