Opposite of #1

What Xmas song do you really, really love?

I love 'Carol of the Bells' so much. And even though I'm an atheist, 'The Holly and the Ivy' (the first verse is so pagan....).

I don't celebrate Christmas but I love the "Jingle Bell Rock" and "Winter Wonderland".

WW is fun, yes. I remember it being one of the classics on the big reel-to-reel tape of Xmas music my dad would play every year.

Re: Opposite of #1

(Anonymous) 2017-12-06 10:38 am (UTC)(link)
I love both these ones, too.

Is your go-to version of Winter Wonderland the version where the snowman is "Parson Brown" or the version where he's a "circus clown"?

I'm a fan of carols with a long history, Coventry is good, Greensleeves can be good depending on arrangement. My parent's church had a lot of good music talent, so I'm down for some of the Bach and Handel nativity choral works.

It is! All the songs we sung as kids in church at the Xmas pageant have a special place in my heart; not because of the religious aspect, but just the memories of Xmas when i was little, and how amazing and fun and exciting it wall was.

I Wonder as I Wander is my favorite but it's not sung much. I wish it were in our hymnal so I could request it during song-request services.

I like "Carol of the Bells" but only a capella chorus, or with handbells.

Anything from 'A Christmas Gift For You' by Phil Spector. It has been tainted by Spector's conviction but I grew up listening to it every year and it's not Christmas to me without it.

Also cheesy classics like 'Merry Christmas Everybody' or 'I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day'. I know they're completely overused in advertising and I feel for the people who work in places that have them on repeat all through December, but I can't help it, they make me grin like an idiot.

Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) by Darlene Love
Wonderful Christmas Time by Paul McCartney (lol I know this song gets shit on but it's really not that bad and I have a lot of nostalgic feelings about it)
Please Come Home For Christmas by the Eagles
Santa Claus And His Old Lady by Cheech and Chong (not really a song, more of a story, lots of nostalgia)
Jingle Bells
Silent Night
We Three Kings

Honestly, if a choir is singing it, I probably do. So a lot of religious ones. I mean, I am religious, but honestly I mostly love them for the sound. Minor key ones especially. So come though long expected Jesus and oh come oh come Emmanuel are two of my favorites. Also Angels from the Realms of Glory (the American tune, not the British one), which I rarely hear.

Also fond of Oh Tannenbaum, Carol of the Bells, and It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.

I... really love to sing Christmas songs. So anything I can really get into alone in the car is A+, even though I'm more agnostic than anything else.

O Holy Night
O Come O Come Emmanuel
Mary Did You Know
Silent Night
Joy to the World
Breath of Heaven

Also growing up the church choir would sometimes do What Child Is This Child Of The Poor and it always gave me shivers. (Best bits start at 3:20) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7ef2ULvr-c

I have already made mention in the thread that I do love "Carol of the Bells" and "O Holy Night".

My third favourite is not technically a Christmas song but the big televised Christmas carols usual have someone singing it every year and I prefer when it's David Hobson doing it - "The Holy City".

My favourites of the last years is "O come all ye faithful" - although I really love the Latin version the most. I have a soft spot for "We Three Kings" and "God rest ye Merry Gentlemen" as well. I generally like traditional British and German Christmas carols. I also think "Lord Of The Dance" and "Good King Wenceslas" are cute.
Carol of the Bells is great - there are some version of it that are downright eerie.

Non-traditional Christmas songs I love are "Fairytale of New York", "Bound for Bethlehem" by Bruce Guthro, "This Ain't New Jersey" by Smith & Burrows, "An Angel Came Down" and "An Angel Returned" by Trans-Siberian Orchestra (I generally like their Christmas songs) and "The Rebel Jesus" by Jackson Browne.
