Have you ever given a speech on something fandom related?

[personal profile] philstar22 2017-12-07 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I'm giving a speech in two weeks, and I decided my theme is going to be something Tolkien. I'm thinking maybe hope in his works? I'm in this public speaking group. Most of my other speeches have been about real life things. But I kind of want to switch it up.

Has anyone else given a speech to a group on something related to fandom?

Sort of? I gave a speech on French horror films in college.

I gave a presentation in my law class about fan fiction and copyright law, with specific reference to Anne Rice. My professor liked it because it was clearly something I was interested in, and it wasn't what anyone else had done. I'm sure a presentation on Tolkien would be good, since there's so much Tolkien to talk about

Yes.

I spoke for around twenty minutes about the terms, intricacies, and franchise history of Monster High in college.

I'd have loved to hear that!

I gave a presentation about the Life With Derek fandom for a college class about media engagement.

+1

I used to like that show. Had no idea there was a fandom for it (naturally, not surprised)

Hmmm. While I'm not a hardcore Tolkien fan, I like and am familiar with his work but... this does not sound like a terribly exciting topic to me, to be honest. I like discussions of themes in literary works, but "hope" isn't very complex or attention grabbing because it feels like this would simply involve pointing one example or quote after another and going, "Yep, here it is again!"

That's a very good point, actually. Interesting to me, but not to people who don't know his works I think. Okay, I'll find another topic. Thanks.

You would get along so well with my dad. He's obsessed with all things Tolkien and even did his third master's thesis on the role of wonder in Lord of the Rings, after which his mentor presented him with his own staff. He's also done panels on Tolkien in some of our local cons while dressed as Gandalf (he has waist-length hair and a beard that reaches his stomach). He also has a Dumbledore costume and what started out as a Gandalf the White robe, but which he painted into an amazing scene of an ent pointing the way into Faerie. Still need to upload those photos...

Anyway, I think a speech on themes of hope in Tolkien's works sounds kick-ass.

ETA: Forgot to mention, in my anthro class on monster mythology a few years ago, we were assigned a group project discussing various monsters as they appear in media. I was in the werewolf group, and my part of the presentation was on the werewolves in The Elder Scrolls, specifically Skyrim. It remains one of only two group projects I've ever actually enjoyed.
