Things that make you feel old

[personal profile] philstar22 2017-12-08 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
What things in your life make you feel old? How about anything that makes you feel young?

I've started doing this water aerobics class. It is a good work out, and my physical therapist suggested it because the pool makes exercise easier on my back and hip. But I'm the only person in that class under 60. It feels like such an old lady thing to do.

I also have memory issues. Every time I hear someone else complain about a bad memory, it is older people talking about it as a sign of aging. But I have a horrible memory and I'm only in my 30s.

I've previously been that person in the pool with the seniors, too. I actually found it less stressful than being in a gym with other young people where I was the secret old lady with bad joints.

I have horrible memory problems, too. Diagnosed with cognitive impairment, which is fun because people don't understand why I can remember I have cognitive impairment, but forget what a pen is called or that I need to eat regularly.

We can be senile together. :)

lmao I just posted below about my lower back pain. It will get worse with age, despite all of my efforts. That makes me feel old.

Being in love makes me feel young. Same with noticing the difference in my skin after taking collagen pills for a month straight. If I look nice, I feel young

I felt old the first time I put my hand into a sink of cold, murky water to pull the plug without using a fork to try and get the plug out.

Perfect answer. I used to spend forever trying to devise clever ways to get the plug out (or a few strands of spaghetti because some people don't know how to use a goddamn sieve) and now it's like nope, just get right in there, no fucks given.

Right? I HATED pulling that plug when I was young. SO. GROSS.

I think in general, any moment where there's a room full of people saying "I don't want to touch the gross thing" and you go into gives-no-fucks mother mode and say "Fine, I'LL touch the gross thing, you babies."

Surprisingly nothing really. I'm stuck in this weird place where I know I'm older, but I keep forgetting how old I am. Every once in a while I'll get reminded that there are people a hell of a lot younger than me who are adults with children now, but for me it's kinda "Oh, yeah that's a thing." I never FEEL old, or young, or anything really, and it's kind of weird to hear other people talk about it.

Christmas in general, because it makes me remember being that perfect age where you just get given stuff without being expected to buy anything in return and it was just a really happy (materialistic) time. Now I get stressed about having enough cash to buy everything for people and getting yelled at by customers who expect us to still have advent calendars in stock on December 7th.

Well, I am old. I have a denture which makes me so uncomfortable I refuse to wear it. I have little lady-hairs growing out of my chin. (I should pluck them or something, that's on me, but they're hard to see fortunately.)

Playing Pokemon makes me feel young, even though there are plenty of adults who play it.

Ugh, chin hairs. Mine are very visible. I try to keep on top of the shaving them, but I don't always remember.

Hearing songs I liked in goddamn *high school* on an oldies station. I'm not that old, am I?!!

Considering I'm about to turn 40... yeah, that's making me feel old.

Realizing that I'm older than most actors currently on popular TV shows.

That I don't really give a shit how old I am and rarely can remember without counting from my birth year.

Old - I worked until my body couldn't do it anymore, and retired... at 24 years of age. I have more in common with the elderly than my friends. It's weird as shit.

Young? Not really, but I do feel small and stupid when I try to make sense of paperwork and eligibility criteria for the pension. It's deliberate on their part to make it confusing, but knowing that doesn't make it easier.

Listening to all the songs I used to listen back in highschool in the radio station that is for old music. I've heard Gennie in a Bottle and All The Small Things along with Duran Duran's Ordinary World.

Baaaaaaack in my day /shakes cane and drinks prune juice

Yup. And the fact that I like music that is even from before I was born doesn't help. Then again, current pop music sometimes makes me feel young. I just have a wide variety of musical likes.

Watching Buffy with my 16-year-old niece and being asked frequently whether what she's seeing is an accurate representation of the hair/styles/etc of the time. Which it mostly is, at least in the area where I grew up. :P

Seeing every customer service job being staffed by teenagers and college kids.

Everything lately.

It's been twenty years since Titanic was released.
The Cartoon Network is twenty-five years old. So is Aladdin.
George Michael's Faith is thirty years old.
USA Today and Disney's EPCOT are thirty-five.
Edward Furlong, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and James Van Der Beek are forty.
It's been fifty years since the Carol Burnett Show premiered (I wasn't born then, but I did watch it later).

Old - all the little aches and pains I have. The fact that staying up late no longer appeals to me as much as sleep. Realising that 80% of conversation topics with friends are house prices, money, cars and kids.

Young - any of the drum and bass or punk tracks from my youth.
