Finally found a new home for my rooster

(Anonymous) 2017-12-08 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
So I’ve posted about this before, but back in June I got baby chicks in the mail. I’d paid extra to have them sexed so they’d all be girls, but it’s not an exact science, and one turned out to be a rooster. Hens are legal where I am; roosters aren’t.

I dropped him off today at a local farm store that agreed to take him in and try to rehome him, but I’m scared because they used to offer classes on how to slaughter and clean chickens for meat. And, since roosters aren’t legal here, people who “adopt” roosters often eat them, use them as dogfight bait, or in cockfighting. I hope he finds a good home and has a long life there. I’ve had hens live to be 14 and one made it to 16, so I have a skewed view of what constitutes a long chicken life. Still. Good luck, Beetlejuice.

Awesome! I hope he gets adopted by someone who will keep him.

Were you the person who was like "I have a secret pet I can't disclose the species of"?

Either way, I hope he doesn't get killed or involved in fighting and finds a good home.

AYRT—no, but I wish I had been because that anon sounded like they weren’t taking good care of their whatsit, the whatsit was not a domestic animal, or both. I’ve been whining about my rooster without hiding his species since I first heard a faint “doodle-oo” from the coop, but he seemed happy for a domestic dinosaur with a peanut-sized brain. He loved treats, cooed at all his hens, never attacked people, and didn’t mind being picked up and cuddled.
