Are there any video games that you always come back to?

Skyrim and Minecraft are the big two. I go back to those at least once or twice a year. I suspect Mass Effect: Andromeda will be as well for me, in the long run.

The Legacy of Kain games (Soul Reaver/Soul Reaver 2 in particular) to the point that I have now reached the level of nerdiness where I know the dialogue by heart and could probably speedrun them without any difficulty.

Panzer Dragoon Saga is one I go back to every year or so. It's just so damn good and ahead of its time and it's a shame it can't be rereleased/remastered or it might have a proper fandom. The environment/creature designs and music were so unique and it was a brilliant spin on the idea of dragons before they really became a 'thing' in popular media.

The FMV montage that plays on the start screen still gives me shivers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ksfa4FyaUXc

World Of Warcraft. I always come back for the new expansion.

I don't replay video games very often, but Fallout New Vegas, Persona 3 Portable, Mass Effect 2/3 and Dragon Age 2 are all definitely on the list.

Yoshi's Island 1 & 2 and Zelda: A Link to the Past. They are my go-to games when I'm feeling really stressed and want to unwind. I know them from head to toes.

Zelda in general probably gets the most replay out of me. And I pretty much replay all of them except the second game.

I've got about 2000 hours in on Skyrim, across more than a dozen characters (although some got deleted before getting out of Helgen).

I've played Final Fantasy VI-VIII about 10 times each, and IX, X, X-2 and XII around half that.

I've played The World Ends With You through something like 8 times. (Have yet to 100% it.)

I really liked what I played of The World Ends With You, but I had so much trouble with the combat. I felt like how my dad probably feels whenever I get him to play modern games. I just found it so frantic and fast-paced and I couldn't keep up. :(

Edit: and that's not to say I don't like fast-paced combat. I love DMC and Bayonetta and stuff like that, but TWEWY made me feel so slow.

It actually gets easier as the game goes on, IME. Not just because you get used to it, but because the pins last longer as they level up, so there's less frantically swapping between psyches, and because the larger variety of them as the game goes on means you can tailor your pin deck to your skills (I usually have primarily slash, press, and passive by the midgame). (The Threads that increase the slop in the light puck/hit counter/cross combo also help a lot - they don't make it easier to hit the enemies, but they make it easier to get bonuses and fill the Fusion pin.)

If you'd like some advice - if you're playing on DS, set your partner on active and just concentrate on what Neku's doing - it's still frantic, but it's a lot easier than trying to manage both. (Once you've got a handle on Neku/set up his pin deck to your preferences, then you can ease back into two-screening it.) If iOS or Droid, try to have one of your major pins activate the same way as the partner pin - it makes cross combos a lot easier, especially in week 3.

Thank you for the advice! I got it on DS right when it came out. Will have to dig it out and give it another shot. I guessed it had the usual RPG thing of 'it gets easier' but I was young and got easily discouraged, lol. It was a weird thing because I actually liked the combat system even though it kicked my arse. I thought it was really unique and a great way of utilizing the dual screens.

Yeah, the interface is really cool, and utilizes just about every DS feature. (You'll know when to sleep it when* you get there.)

The iOS/Android version did a pretty good job of adapting it to a single screen, too, though it sits a bit less easily with the story.

* Well...if. It's an optional encounter.

That sounds awesome. I love games that take full advantage of the technology like that. I remember playing The Phantom Hourglass and finally figuring out I had to blow into the microphone to blow out torches and my teenage self was just so impressed. Very awkward to do on bus journeys though.

That was also the one you had to sleep it to copy a map, right?

Yeah, I really liked the DS games that used the various functions well. TWEWY, Hotel Dusk (used the closing function), etc. (The ones that botched them were extra-disappointing, though. I'm looking at you, Ace Attorney's use of the mic. But you made up for it with the touch screen...)

Okami. Always, always Okami. I have beaten the game at least five times on the PS2 and twice on the PS3. Right now I am planning on making a run through the game using each of the karmic transformers, when I have the time to do so.

Final Fantasy VIII is another one. I actually bought my PS3 just to play Okami and FFVIII when my PS2 died. It was my first ever Final Fantasy game and it is by far my favorite, even though a lot of people hate it.

I also go through periods where I will return to playing Cooking Mama, Animal Crossing New Leaf, Happy Home Designer, and the first two Ace Attorney games on the 3DS when I'm not playing one of the Pokemon games.

Fellow Okami fan here! Such a beautiful and underloved game, I'm actually in the middle of a replay now. My brother sent me the official artbook for my birthday and it's so gorgeous. <3

I really wish we could get a third game that takes place on the Celestial Plain. Could be a prequel, could be a sequel, I just wanna see the place they keep teasing us with in Okami and Okamiden.
