Re: Do you enjoy conspiracy theories?
(Anonymous) 2017-12-09 02:20 am (UTC)(link)Like, some dude will go missing, and he has a picture posted on social media that has a painting of an elephant in the background, and someone on Websleuths or Reddit will decide that OBVIOUSLY this means that he was involved in selling the body parts of an endangered species of elephant on the black market, and he was kidnapped and murdered by a high ranking elephant cartel member. And he was from Boring Suburb, and it has a large population of immigrants from The Only Country Where That Species Of Elephant Still Exists, and that's just HIGHLY SUSPICIOUS and clearly the cops in that area are in cahoots with the elephant cartel and so they're helping to cover up his death. Except for Detective Joe, who had an affair with Elephant Cartel Leader's girlfriend, and so there's tension between them, and Detective Joe used a specific word in a televised press conference, and EVERYONE KNOWS that that totally ordinary, common word is used in the illegal endagered elephant part trade to mean "decapitate and eat someone" and so Detective Joe is trying to secretly signal for help because he's afraid that that's going to happen to him.
People just come up with the most bizarre stories with all these outlandish details that have literally ZERO evidence or basis in reality, and then other people latch onto the "theory" and it spirals out into a giant ball of WTFery.
...when the guy had a history of depression and the most likely explanation is he went somewhere out of the way to commit suicide.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-09 02:24 am (UTC)(link)And I totally didn't answer your question. Sometimes they can be entertaining when they're just weird, harmless stuff.
Other times, when they involve the missing/murdered person being involved in some sort of illegal activity (when there's no evidence they actually were) or there's the implication that they somehow were responsible for what happened to them, and there's always the chance that the person's loved ones might see that bullshit...that just pisses me off.
