Neither of those would have been called a mullet in my school back in the 80s. Steve's is just normal long 80s hair and the other one is more like someone trying to eventually grow a mullet.

When I think mullet I think Joe Dirt or the Achy Breaky Heart guy.

So do I

(Anonymous) 2017-12-10 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much, yeah

(Anonymous) 2017-12-09 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah those aren't mullets. above anon is right, 90s-era Billy Ray Cyrus is a mullet. Late-series Macgyver is a mullet. Business in front, party in the back. Those are just 80s party all over hair.

I got into an argument with my sister over this! Which evolved into figuring out where mullets and rat tails originated. But she insists those are mullets while I don't.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-09 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
You're right, OP. Those aren't mullets. That's classic 80's bad boy hair. The boy in the inset photo is wearing what looks closer to a messy pompadour to me (is he growing it out so he can do the Flock of Seagulls hair?) which would be just about the opposite of a mullet.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-09 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Steve: Definitely not a mullet. He's got that weird, 50s-inspired 80s hair, which makes sense since he starts the show hanging out with the 80s greasers.

Billy: Debatable. It's closer to a mullet than Steve's, but looks more like he had a mullet and is growing it out now. He does, however, rock the 80s perm.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-09 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Is that a perm? I thought perms were really tight curls. Granted, my only experience with perms is Legally Blonde. That just seems like messy, wavy (not that curly) hair.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-09 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
There are different types of perms. Google the band Europe. Every single one of those men has permed hair.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-09 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I apparently know nothing about hair.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-10 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
It's not a big deal. Being able to identify chemically processed hair isn't a life-skill that will save your life someday. *dramatic sting*

He reminds me of some other actor. I can't place my finger on it.

My first thought was Robert Downey Jr. but my friends pointed out he looks exactly like young Rob Lowe

Hmm, that is not who I am thinking of but Billy was definitely modeled after him. Maybe Sebastian Stan?

oh god the days of beautiful young rob lowe! i miss them.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-10 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
When I scrolled down to this secret, I actually thought I was looking at a pic of a young Rob Lowe for half a second.

I think he looks more like Rob Lowe's little brother.

This is why everyone in the Voltron fandom saying Keith has a mullet annoys me

Like, he just has shaggy hair

Neither of those are mullets, though? Mullets are short in the front and long in the back. Steve and Billy just have long hair.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-10 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Billy's hair is layered, so maybe that's where people are getting confused? Can't help with Steve. That's not even mullet-esque.

Useless fact of the day: the German for mullet (hairstyle not fish) is Vokuhila, which is an abbreviation for VOrne KUrz, HInten LAng, i.e. short at the front, long at the back.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-10 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Chiming in to agree - neither of those are mullets. And this post is making me feel old.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-10 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
there's also a difference between 80s American mullet, current American red-neck mullet and Asian boy band mullet.

the language of mullets if you will
