Movie Discussion!

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2017-12-09 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Today we are discussing Edge of Tomorrow!

Here are some questions to start us off.

1. What was your initial reaction when the movie started? How did that change by the end of the movie?

2. Who was your favorite character in the movie? Your least favorite character? Why?

3. What was your favorite scenes? Your least favorite? Why?

4. What did you think of the soundtrack and/or score?

5. What did you think of the production (cinematography, editing, costuming, etc.)?

Feel free to talk about anything else as well!

1. I've seen this before but it was so long ago and I paid so little attention, I basically watched it for the first time. I really did not like the opening. I hate when disaster/apocalypse movies start with the STOCK NEWS FOOTAGE OF SCARY THINGS montage. I loved the movie by the end. It has been said before, but this is the best video game movie that will ever exist.

2. I think my favorite character is a cop out because it is Cage and Vatraski as a team. I just really enjoyed how they worked together and grew to be friends. My least favorite character was Farrell. I didn't like his accent, he annoyed me, and I am not a fan of Bill Paxton.

3. My favorite scene was the training montage where she keeps killing him over and over. It is by far the superior montage. Well, my least favorite scene was the opening montage.

4. I really love the soundtrack to this. EXCEPT for the fact that the opening theme (Angel of Verdun) sounds like a ripoff of some songs from the Prometheus OST.

5. I really enjoyed how the battle scenes looked. I also thought the mimics had such a cool design. I loved how ropy and fluid they were.

I actually liked the fake news footage! It got me up to speed very quickly.

Like you, my favourite bit was the Vatraski-Cage team. Really good how they started working together. I particularly enjoyed how often she shot him.

1. What was your initial reaction when the movie started? How did that change by the end of the movie?

My first reaction was ugh, Tom Cruise, being himself, why did I decide to watch it. Then that changed to oooo, cool, watching Tom Cruise die over and over again. And then I was hooked and by the end I actually liked all the characters, including Cruise's.

2. Who was your favorite character in the movie? Your least favorite character? Why?

Rita, hands down, no contest. She's badass, awesome, stronger than the hero, she's been through a lot and has some issues. I love it. She's complex and interesting and she kicks ass.

3. What was your favorite scenes? Your least favorite? Why?

It is so hard to pick a favorite scene. I love so much of this movie. I love all the various deaths of Cruise. But if I have to pick one scene, it is the first scene where he goes to meet Rita. Least favorite would maybe be the scene where he goes alone to find the Omega and gets killed. The scene is very claustrophobic and a bit too much jump scare.

4. What did you think of the soundtrack and/or score?

I would say it wasn't particularly memorable except for a few moments, but it did work for the movie.

5. What did you think of the production (cinematography, editing, costuming, etc.)?

I love the look of this movie. It looks like a war except with aliens. The aliens look pretty cool. And how they were able to make all the scenes that rewound a little bit different was cool.

I love the training/killing montage but I think montages can be a lot of fun.

Rita is a such a great character. I heard they were thinking of doing a sequel but I actually hope they don't. Because I worry if they did they would explicitly hook up Rita and Cage.

I also love how the aliens look! They are like a great combo between mechanical and organic looking.

They are doing a sequel, and I'm mad. Edge of Tomorrow is a nearly perfect movie that does not in any way need or want a sequel. It is better as a solo film.

O no, not a sequel! It really would spoil the claustrophobic feel of the movie.

Well, I needn't watch it, when all's said and done.

OK, that was quite something and not at all what I thought I was going to see when I started watching it! When the second loop started, I switched on the subtitles, which helped a little bit in figuring out what was going on. Not all that much, but never mind. After a bit I gave up trying to understand it and just went along for the ride, which is singularly appropriate.

1. My initial reaction was “bleh, Tom Cruise” but by golly, that changed by the end of the movie. About the fourth or fifth loop, I think, when he starts rolling under the armoured car.

2. Favourite character was Vatraski. Very cool, determined and unflappable. Angel of Verdun indeed. I'd've liked her to be the protag tbh; she'd already done a lot of figuring out by the time Cage came on the scene. Least favourite was Farrell, but that was probably intended.

3. Favourite scene; I dunno, they were all so interlinked it was hard to say. I quite enjoyed the quieter episode at the farmhouse. I needed a rest by then, and you could see them beginning to care about each other, and Cage was definitely grown up by then. Least favourite; I supposed the Louvre scenes. I was just confused by then.

4. Soundtrack – seemed to fit without calling too much attention to itself.

5. Cinematography, etc, worked very well for me. I mean, I didn't follow it at all, but it was all in keeping.

The aliens, though, didn't work for me; they were just plain daft to go rampaging about on a battlefield without any protection. A bit like the ones in Cowboys and Aliens. They can cross a galaxy to menace Earth but can they get into an armoured car? Apparently not.

But all in all, a very enjoyable film, not one that I'd normally watch (see previous comment on Tom Cruise.) I'd've missed out, so thank-you to those who voted for this one. Might have to watch it again.

SA And I couldn't figure out how to say this, so I'll just say it inelegantly: I really liked the reference to Verdun, the city of absolute dogged resistance amid the carnage of the Great War. That reference was unexpected and really quite moving.

I like how you know a specific loop that made you like Cage. :D Looks like when he became competent.

I sort of assumed that most of the aliens were animalistic. I got a hive mind vibe from the aliens. Also, if they can predict what is going to happen, it makes sense they don't care about protecting themselves because they know what will happen. UNTIL SOMEONE GETS SUPER POWERS! D:

excellent point, I hadn't thought of that! And yes, if the aliens were just worker ants, losing a few million of them wouldn't matter.

Anyway, I'll have another look at it and see if I can figure anything else out. Thank-you for organising all this!
