Re: Movie Discussion!

OK, that was quite something and not at all what I thought I was going to see when I started watching it! When the second loop started, I switched on the subtitles, which helped a little bit in figuring out what was going on. Not all that much, but never mind. After a bit I gave up trying to understand it and just went along for the ride, which is singularly appropriate.

1. My initial reaction was “bleh, Tom Cruise” but by golly, that changed by the end of the movie. About the fourth or fifth loop, I think, when he starts rolling under the armoured car.

2. Favourite character was Vatraski. Very cool, determined and unflappable. Angel of Verdun indeed. I'd've liked her to be the protag tbh; she'd already done a lot of figuring out by the time Cage came on the scene. Least favourite was Farrell, but that was probably intended.

3. Favourite scene; I dunno, they were all so interlinked it was hard to say. I quite enjoyed the quieter episode at the farmhouse. I needed a rest by then, and you could see them beginning to care about each other, and Cage was definitely grown up by then. Least favourite; I supposed the Louvre scenes. I was just confused by then.

4. Soundtrack – seemed to fit without calling too much attention to itself.

5. Cinematography, etc, worked very well for me. I mean, I didn't follow it at all, but it was all in keeping.

The aliens, though, didn't work for me; they were just plain daft to go rampaging about on a battlefield without any protection. A bit like the ones in Cowboys and Aliens. They can cross a galaxy to menace Earth but can they get into an armoured car? Apparently not.

But all in all, a very enjoyable film, not one that I'd normally watch (see previous comment on Tom Cruise.) I'd've missed out, so thank-you to those who voted for this one. Might have to watch it again.

SA And I couldn't figure out how to say this, so I'll just say it inelegantly: I really liked the reference to Verdun, the city of absolute dogged resistance amid the carnage of the Great War. That reference was unexpected and really quite moving.

I like how you know a specific loop that made you like Cage. :D Looks like when he became competent.

I sort of assumed that most of the aliens were animalistic. I got a hive mind vibe from the aliens. Also, if they can predict what is going to happen, it makes sense they don't care about protecting themselves because they know what will happen. UNTIL SOMEONE GETS SUPER POWERS! D:

excellent point, I hadn't thought of that! And yes, if the aliens were just worker ants, losing a few million of them wouldn't matter.

Anyway, I'll have another look at it and see if I can figure anything else out. Thank-you for organising all this!
