I feel like this about shippy AUs in general. People already have a hard time keeping fic in character, so the likelihood that the characters in an AU will resemble anything close to the originals is about nil, and I have no interest in someone's story about cardboard cutout fuck-dolls who work at a cafe.

This exactly. I see so many fics with terrible characterization period, so I'm not surprised that AUs are even more OOC. This is also why I rarely bother with AUs.
