If you mean coffee shop AUs where everyone is in college or something, eh yeah, it ends up as generic slash fic a lot.

On the other hand if they're detectives or agents or something similar to hunting but not, that's not too much of a stretch in a human AU.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
It's not like it takes a lot of imagination to begin with to picture these two together. If your assessment of writers of fics like that is correct, that's a bit sad.

Whooooooo caaaaaaares

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Well, yeah, but why does it matter if they want to write blow-up doll fic?

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I lol’d. Thank you for this comment other anon.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
It doesn't matter any more than it matters that OP judges them.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow I kind of want to read tragic blow up doll fanfic. The ANGST!

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like this about shippy AUs in general. People already have a hard time keeping fic in character, so the likelihood that the characters in an AU will resemble anything close to the originals is about nil, and I have no interest in someone's story about cardboard cutout fuck-dolls who work at a cafe.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
This exactly. I see so many fics with terrible characterization period, so I'm not surprised that AUs are even more OOC. This is also why I rarely bother with AUs.

This, so much!

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I feel the same when I read Transformer / Human pairings and the bot always goes to a human hologram for sexytimes.

It's like...I click a fic to read about a human fucking a robot and now I'm disappointed. -_-;

This reminds me of all the Onepunchman secrets where people were disappointed that Geno's always got an "update" before sexytimes in fics, because they wanted to read about exploring the possibilities of robosex.

Like, I thought it was incredibly funny how they wanted the fics to cater to their cyborg/robotparts kink when most of the fandom was writing about Genos because he was simply a hot anime dude.

Or they like AUs.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe they like to take their favorite characters and put them in a setting not being explored by canon and see what happens.

I mean, if you read it and they don't seem at all like the characters, fair enough.

And sometimes, for some shows, it's really complicated to keep something resembling current canon, since the actual writers can't be bothered to keep the timeline straight or coherent, never mind the contradictory plot points and character traits.

It seems to me that once you strip them of the things that define them as characters and make them a lonely barista and the dude with the overly complicated coffee order, they're not actually your favorite characters anymore. At that point, you might as well admit that you actually ship Misha and Jensen and wish they were in a different show together.

Re: Or they like AUs.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
This is more true for some characters than it is for others. The things that define some characters are mostly things that can be easily transplanted into other settings and scenarios. I wouldn't, however, say this is the case for Dean and Castiel specifically. They seem like they would be hard to relocate into an AU without losing a lot of what makes them them.

ayrt

Why would you strip them of the things that define them as characters? Are you saying that people can't have the same personality traits if they have different occupations? I can see how the being an angel would be a very defining characteristic, but maybe that lonely barista was raised in very bizarre cult. Maybe that dude with the overly complicated coffee order is a bounty hunter who likes to get his brother the most frou-frou order he can think up.

Step 1: take any 2 random coffee shop/college AUs from different fandoms
Step 2: swap the names between these fics
Step 3: can you see any difference?

Destiel college AU looks the exact same way as a Drarry college AU or a Thorki college AU. If you want to see your favourite characters in a setting not explored by canon, you can grab any random college AU to another canon and you'll get the same results by copy-pasting the names of characters onto it.

But what are your thoughts on fics where they're still hunters, but written as horribly OOC?

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

I hate those as well, but can still read them in a pinch because at least the characters superficially resemble their canon selves.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a destiel shipper. I read a ton of fan fiction. I like both AUs and canon fics. Basically I care if they're well written, beyond that I don't care much about the setting. It can be Another College Fic (destiel shippers love that setting and therefore a lot are set in college) and if it's written, I'll still read it.

The only kind I don't read is mpreg or A/B/O.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like shippers of majorly popular pairings, whose attitude towards fanfic is "Om nom nom, most fic is good," are very underrepresented on FS.

So as a long time johnlock shipper who also reads a ton of fanfic and likes most of it, I just wanna say, fistbump.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
Fanfiction writers lacking skill and imagination? You can probably assume that without shitting on a specific genre

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 09:10 am (UTC)(link)
I feel about the same about Hannibal fanfics where no one is a cannibal and the food is just food.
I mean... what's the point?

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahahaha this is both hilarious & accurate.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-15 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
i'd take the people actually writing any sort of fics for fun and enjoyment regardless of skill level over the people who complain about it aaaany day
