I like Hugo Weaving but he always seemed like an odd choice as Elrond. Now if the rumors were true and we could've had David Bowie... THAT would've been amazing.

I console myself with the thought that he refused on the basis it was a downgrade, from Goblin King to mere Lord Half-elven....
(also, long flowing robes go against his idiom).

But gee shucks yeah there were not enough movies made to play off Bowie's fascinating oddness-tempered-by-mortal-aging.

I loved Elrond in movies but that might be due to me not reading the books. I'm a movies fan through and through. They changed Thrunduil's character much more from what I've heard. Elrond building a city and then managing it, as well as being a healer which takes a lot of hard work - I can see it in the movie Elrond.
