Not OP, but yeah, it being extremely fucked up was definitely the main appeal for me. But that doesn't mean I don't have conflicted feelings about the fact that I liked it so much.

Some people are content to like what the like and give it no further thought because it's just fiction. That's valid. Other people feel that what they like does in fact mean something about them, so when they like something that's fucked up it's like, "Okay, what does that mean about me?" That's also valid.

If this kind of self-reflection isn't your thing, that's fine, anon, but I'm not sure why it bothers you that it's my thing.

Also, I've personally never found self-reflection obstructive to living.

Nope. For most the appeal was "ooh, poor devoted Spike, poor sexy Spike, cruel unloving Buffy, she MUST love him". Gack.
