It's Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Most of the ships either make both parties into worse people than they already were, or end with one party dying for stupid reasons.

And Angel. :/ More reasons I'm glad Firefly was cancelled before anyone could get together/broken up horribly.

Buffy/Faith is the only way

LOL, first comment is the best, ita.

How is it any worse of a ship than any other Buffy/?? ship?

(Anonymous) 2017-12-16 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but they may mean because he did try to rape her.

However, I think a lot of Joss ships are just as problematic, some for vaguely similar reasons. Joss tropes in general, maybe? His characters tend to have wavering moral standards.

I shipped Buffy/Spike when I was younger, and I have no problem with people shipping it now, but their relationship in S6 was really fucked up and toxic. It was violent, and there was a lot of anger and even hatred in it on both sides. And for Buffy it was kind of a feedback loop of self-hatred, despair, self-medication, and self-punishment.

And I mean, the show never treated their S6 relationship like it was anything other than extremely messed up. But as a shipper, I loved all their interactions, and didn't want them to end things - even though being with Spike was, in Buffy's own words, "killing her." Plus, Spike did eventually try to rape her, so if you know that's where things end up in S6 but still ship Buffy and pre-soul!Spike, I can see feeling conflicted about that.

Basically, not everyone is wholly comfortable with shipping something toxic, that makes at least one of the characters involved hate themself, and that eventually involves a rape attempt.

You don't have to stop shipping it, OP. Fuck anyone who tries to guilt you into doing that. It's just shipping, ffs.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-16 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
In fairness, given that Buffy was fifteen when he fell in love with her, Angel/Buffy is kind of problematic too. You have to overlook a lot either way.

(And I LIKED Angel/Buffy.)

"it is a bad ship" - IDFGI, isn't that the entire appeal???

It is for me.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-16 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but yeah, it being extremely fucked up was definitely the main appeal for me. But that doesn't mean I don't have conflicted feelings about the fact that I liked it so much.

Some people are content to like what the like and give it no further thought because it's just fiction. That's valid. Other people feel that what they like does in fact mean something about them, so when they like something that's fucked up it's like, "Okay, what does that mean about me?" That's also valid.

Nope. For most the appeal was "ooh, poor devoted Spike, poor sexy Spike, cruel unloving Buffy, she MUST love him". Gack.

They're my gold standard of fucked up OTPs, tbh. They look pretty together, whether they're beating the shit out of each other, berating the shit out of each other, or fucking the shit out of each other. Ship on, my friend.

They were my first OTP. I don't care if anyone thinks it's problematic, the show never framed their relationship as being healthy and I think that's what matters.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-16 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't think of a single BTVS ship that isn't problematic.

Do we just stop shipping all problematic things? What if that's what people enjoy in fiction?
Can fiction not be an outlet for that now?

You do you, OP. They're both fucked up and they're hot together. Don't apologise for having eyes.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-16 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Echoing everyone else that all Buffy/?? ships are problematic. Ship and let ship! I love it when someone stays with a ship for years or rediscovers an old ship...warms my shippy little heart <3

(Anonymous) 2017-12-16 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes people like to read a fucked-up relationship because they like the drama. Or it reminds them of a fucked-up relationship in their own life and seeing it in fiction helps them process. Or there's some other catharsis in it. Or they just want to see what the characters will do next.

It's *good* that people try to show healthy relationships in fiction.

But you never have to apologise for wanting to see something fucked-up. Just, you know, respect rating and tagging systems. It's all good.

You don't have to apologise.

I like the comments on this secret.
a) Show always portrayed it as unhealthy
b) it's a messed up ship
c) it was hella hot
d) still ship it
e) you do you

All these points gathered, I really need to rewatch Buffy/actually watch it (watched it on/off As a kid, saw Spike a few times, liked the look of Buffy/Spike, but I ran away with Angel when he got his own show)

And is S6 the season where they are super fucked up together? Because I need to know...anon upthread with the graphic depictions of the scenes, was It S6 where that shit goes down?

(Anonymous) 2017-12-17 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, S6 is the big Buffy/Spike season.

Eh, don't feel bad. I'm way more into Buffy/Faith, but Buffy and Spike really did have some awesome moments, so why not ship? Sure, some stuff sucked, but - he's a soulless demon, she's a superhero with daddy/mommy/self issues.

What's not to love?

(Anonymous) 2017-12-17 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
It is a messed up relationship, but a very good ship. One of the best in the history of all of television.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-17 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Screw it, OP. Ship whatever you like and ignore people who try and make you feel guilty for your opinions on fictional people.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-17 10:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yup, I liked it and idgaf. It's not like the show was full of healthy relationships or anything, at least these two were hot.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-18 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Buffy/Giles shipper since Day 1 and no regrets!
