I shipped Buffy/Spike when I was younger, and I have no problem with people shipping it now, but their relationship in S6 was really fucked up and toxic. It was violent, and there was a lot of anger and even hatred in it on both sides. And for Buffy it was kind of a feedback loop of self-hatred, despair, self-medication, and self-punishment.

And I mean, the show never treated their S6 relationship like it was anything other than extremely messed up. But as a shipper, I loved all their interactions, and didn't want them to end things - even though being with Spike was, in Buffy's own words, "killing her." Plus, Spike did eventually try to rape her, so if you know that's where things end up in S6 but still ship Buffy and pre-soul!Spike, I can see feeling conflicted about that.

Basically, not everyone is wholly comfortable with shipping something toxic, that makes at least one of the characters involved hate themself, and that eventually involves a rape attempt.
