Re: Star Wars - spoilers

I thought it was overall pretty good, though I do think it got kind of long and clunky. When climactic scenes happened, the movie just kept going. A lot of what happened also didn't end up being important. Still, it had a few interesting twists and I liked a lot of the character dynamics.

1. Rose was cute, but the whole Finn/Rose subplot ended up being pointless. But I do get that failure was meant to be a constant theme here. It was kind of a shame that for all the humor in the movie, John Boyega was given none of it. He has great comedic timing, but Rose ended up being sillier than him, not that they had much good humor to work with. No opinion on whether or not it'll be a canon (two-sided) ship. I guess I wasn't quite invested enough in it yet.
2. Rey NOT having important parents... was a fantastic reveal. I know a lot of fans hated this, but I think it was the best thing they could've done and made for the best twist. The prequel trilogy had really gone the whole "Force sensitivity is GENETIC" and the Skywalker family dynasty is important and all, but Kylo is already filling that role. Rey being a nobody is cool.
3. Loved Snoke twist dying, and the Rey/Kylo fight. Not sure what it ended up accomplishing though, since Kylo went out of it suddenly deciding for sure he was the Big Bad and was happy to kill anyone/everyone. I like Kylo well enough as a character, but so far he's not quite holding it for me as the Big Bad. But he also has gone too far for any redemption arc that doesn't involve his death/self sacrifice. I was honestly kind of disappointed in Luke and Leia. Leia, as a mother - it felt weird to have her just dismiss Ben as dead. And Luke, as his teacher and supposedly wise Jedi, should have been a little more... sage-like instead of all "go fuck yourself, Kylo". It's one thing to know when you have to put a dangerous person down, but their attitudes surprised me.
4. Phasma... what is the point of her? Is she just supposed to be Boba Fett, a character with minimal screen time that looks cool?
5. I don't think Luke is dead. I'll be kind of disappointed if he is. There was no point in him pulling that trick and then ending up dead after all. Plus, considering Carrie died irl, and probably won't be much in the next film, they are much better off keeping Luke.
6. I also hate to say this, but Leia is underwhelming to me. That includes Carrie's acting. I'm sorry. I like that she's there. But she just wasn't interesting. The whole subplot with the other admiral lady and Poe was a little frustrating, because it felt like drama that could've been avoiding with a little bit of clear communication. At any rate, Leia. I thought she'd somehow clock out this film, Carrie's death considering, but Leia is still very much in the game. How will they handle it next film?
7. Light speed kamikaze was awesome though, but it's one of those things that kind of makes you wonder why they don't just do that all the time. Especially if they can get droids to man the ships and avoid casualties.

No ships. Or rather, the only ship I'm kind of curious about is Poe/Finn. Rey/Kylo is mildly interesting, especially if they aren't related after all.

I was so happy to see Phasma! I am almost certain that she was in the film only because fans were pissed that Gwendolyn Christie was so wasted in TFA and were left believing she'd been killed in a trash compactor. Fans have been saying for two years the actress deserves better than that and now it's finally happened. Although during the fight scene I'm positive it was someone else in her costume because Gwendolyn is a graceful fighter and her character's position would mean she would know how to fight but the person in the suit was beyond terrible. Very wooden, bad timing, just painful to watch.

2. Same! I was thrilled in the theater - this universe has enough Skywalkers running around, we needed a powerful Force-sensitive character who was just some nobody from a junk planet.

4. Maybe she comes back in the third movie...? There was a lot of hype around Phasma that ultimately went nowhere, so hopefully there's more payoff later. She wouldn't be the first person to reappear after a should-be fatal scene.

5. I really hope he is. He wanted to go out on his terms, helping his sister and friends. Him dying while looking at the twin setting suns was a mirror for how he was first introduced, it would be strange if he was brought back after that.

Rey's "reveal" was shitty and flew COMPLETELY in the face of TFA.

That and Kylo is lying. He is a manipulative asshole.
