How can you experience second-hand embarrassment from something you never read?

(Anonymous) 2017-12-19 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
From the concept.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-19 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Presumably they mean that they never read it because they know that if they read it, they will experience second-hand embarrassment, either because of past experience with the section in particular or because they know themselves well enough that they know which subjects they find embarrassing.

lmao I'm like...there's very few, if any, fanworks big and important enough to be singled out like that on a trope page. Probably Fifty Shades is the biggest one.

I also feel that way when fanworks no one has heard of have full fledged TVT pages but they're easy enough to pass on.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-19 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I'm honestly just not that interested? Don't get me wrong, I actually like fanfic, but that's not what I look at TV Tropes for.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-19 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Oh gosh, same! I really don't understand why it's even there.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-19 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I always click it out of curiosity, but I've never come across an example I was familiar with.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-19 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
i mean, same, but I feel the same way about 2/3 of the content in the other categories

(Anonymous) 2017-12-19 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
noted.

However, as someone who recently discovered that fics of mine are recced under two different small fandoms, I'm happy for the extra exposure.

Yeah, I was really chuffed to see one of mine on there.

some of what I wrote is in there. :)

(Anonymous) 2017-12-19 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I don't see why it's 'embarrassing' to you. I mean fanworks are a piece of media and thus there are people like to trope their fave fics as much as anything else.

I find this mindset toward fanworks and considering them "cringy" just for being fanworks stupid and baffling. Is there some assumption that fan authors like to put examples from their own works? because it's popular to see fanfic authors as pathetic and desperate for attention?

I dunno what else it could be aside from a "fanfiction isn't as LEGITIMATE as original fiction"type of view.

not op

(Anonymous) 2017-12-19 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
TV tropes is about grinding down every piece of work to a series of increasingly (and sometimes weirdly) specific tropes. It reduces everything to components the site has deemed exist. It's a cringeworthy concept in general sometimes, and applied to fan works, that are really about enjoying stuff unselfconsciously and bathing in emotion, that way of looking at fanworks just makes me cringe SO HARD.

This idea that everything can be reduced to a bunch of stereotypes sometimes harms the magic of even complex and plot driven things which are professionally produced. Why would I ever want that attitude associated with fanworks (even if they're not ones I like)?

(Anonymous) 2017-12-19 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
"people who don't enjoy things the normal way are WEIRD" is all i'm getting out of this.

It must be only in massive fandoms to have that section. Even then I have to wonder who is compiling that list and their motives.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-19 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
people??? who like these fics???

I mean you could make the same argument for all of TV Tropes honestly.

I typically just skip it because I know I'm not going to look up fics from it based on properties I don't even follow the canon for.

I think my favourite part of TV Tropes lately is Useful Notes.

It used to gather a lot of entries for gory grimdark My Little Pony fanfics. I can only assume there was someone who really liked posting about that stuff. I also recall a decent amount of harem fantasies, some “time traveler solves every conflict in the series” fics, and a few fics that were actually good.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-19 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
This seems reasonable and wise to me. I can't even stand to look at the anime (sorry fans).

(Anonymous) 2017-12-19 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
I don't blame you, OP. I've found that the fics recommended in that section are only there due to people sucking up to the ones who maintain the site.

It’s been years since I was on TV Tropes, but I don’t recall them ever deleting fic entries. There’s no reason to suck up to anyone—you just make a fic page, and you’ll continue having a fic page.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-19 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
It's usually 90% Shinji/Asuka fanfics

In case you wanted to analyze the type of peeps that do TvTropes

(Anonymous) 2017-12-19 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
Ew.
That's like the worst ship, Asuka deserves better.
