I feel like I'm going to disappoint the kids in my family because their birthdays fall close to christmas and I can't afford much right now. A few years ago I could afford to spend a bit more on them, and I did. I just don't want them to think it's because I care less.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, anon. Kids can and should learn that gift giving isn't about receiving a ton of stuff or expensive presents, and starting at an early age is better than waiting. Maybe consider giving the gift of experiences rather than objects... even if you're not super close to these kids, spending time with them and listening to them is one of the best things you can do for a child. Even if it's just a coupon to pick them up, go to the park and get ice cream.

It's also a good argument not to go overboard even if you can afford it.

I'm sure they'll realize. Do you ever talk to them about it? (these are your kids, right? not cousins etc?) .

My mother would let us know that money would be tight for a months, so as kids, we knew how hard she worked & we didn't ask for things/we knew she would try to get us things when she could afford it, but the material gifts didn't matter much.
