Started my new job today. But because it is near the holidays, a lot of the usual work is not being done. AND my boss will be out this week and most of next week. So, I have no idea what I'll be doing. :/

Could be a good thing tbh - gives you a chance to ease in and get familiar with the environment and the people and the company and everything. And be bright eyed and bushy tailed so they assume you're a hard worker forever.

How was it otherwise

Not bad. Right now everything is overwhelming because there were a lot of spreadsheets, data, and industry lingo involved. But must of the people I met seem nice AND I have my own office.

I feel like I'm going to disappoint the kids in my family because their birthdays fall close to christmas and I can't afford much right now. A few years ago I could afford to spend a bit more on them, and I did. I just don't want them to think it's because I care less.

Re: petty non fandom venting

(Anonymous) 2017-12-19 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't worry about it too much, anon. Kids can and should learn that gift giving isn't about receiving a ton of stuff or expensive presents, and starting at an early age is better than waiting. Maybe consider giving the gift of experiences rather than objects... even if you're not super close to these kids, spending time with them and listening to them is one of the best things you can do for a child. Even if it's just a coupon to pick them up, go to the park and get ice cream.

It's also a good argument not to go overboard even if you can afford it.

I'm sure they'll realize. Do you ever talk to them about it? (these are your kids, right? not cousins etc?) .

My mother would let us know that money would be tight for a months, so as kids, we knew how hard she worked & we didn't ask for things/we knew she would try to get us things when she could afford it, but the material gifts didn't matter much.

I started a new exercise program about a week and a half ago and I haven't lost any weight yet.

Always remember that muscles weigh more than fat so at least on a scale, a new workout routine might not immediately show.

my nutritionist told me that too, but I don't want to build muscle, I want to lose weight.

Building muscle will help you lose weight in the long term. You burn more calories for every pound of muscle you have, even when just doing simple things like standing for a while or climbing stairs.

Re: petty non fandom venting

(Anonymous) 2017-12-19 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Even a little bit of muscle is going to make your weight fluctuate, but ultimately, bring down the amount of fat you carry, because it will increase your metabolism. Muscle is good. You don't have to have body-builder levels, just enough to keep your body healthy and burning fat. Most fat loss is from metabolism and dietary changes, so don't quit your exercise, but look at what changes you're making elsewhere as well.

Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas plays at least once an hour at my work. I've never been so sick of a single Christmas song in all my years working holiday retail.

I keep volunteering to do things at work that aren't actually my job, and it's gotten to the point where it's not leaving me time for the stuff that actually is my job. But they really need the help so I don't like to say no. I keep hoping things will settle down but it's not going to happen soon.

This is such a first world problem but I've fucked my back. I stupidly transported my weights from one place to another in a shoulder bag, jerked the bag up my shoulder, and pulled the muscles in my lower back. So I can't go to yoga today since I can't move without crying out and it means I probably won't be able to do my strength training this week until it eases off a bit. Bahhhhh.

Re: petty non fandom venting

(Anonymous) 2017-12-19 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry to hear about your back!

sort of off topic (in regards to your pain)
But what do you do for strength training? Do you have a fitness regimen?
I want to start exercising, but I'm thinking I'm just gonna hula hoop for 30 minutes a day And do some interspersed pilates/yoga videos lol

Re: petty non fandom venting

Thanks, anon.

I got into it very gradually. I was doing yoga once a week, upped it to two, then started doing that and swimming twenty pool lengths a day and gradually increased that to thirty lengths, and now can swim forty. I've been lazy with regards to the swimming lately, though, because it's so cold.

After I built my fitness up with that, I started doing strength workouts with some light dumbbells. I use these HASFit ones on Youtube since I find the instructions really easy to follow.

I do this one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0bhE67HuDY

Or this one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIHy-ZnSndA

Depending on how I feel on the day twice a week. There's a lower body one too that I want to start alternating with. From what I've read optimum for strength training is twice a week with other stuff three times a week. I've just switched to a heavier set of weights for this after about 4 months of doing that.

I also do ten push ups a day and 30 seconds of plank. I couldn't even do one push-up two months ago, so the improvement is gradual but it is there.

When you start exercising you might not be able to do all of the yoga postures or complete whole routines and it can get disheartening but everyone starts like that. Just try and do a little bit more each time and eventually you get them.

Sorry for the essay! Apparently I had a lot to say about that.

Are weights expensive? Is there a company you'd recommend? I want to switch away from going to the gym to doing strength training at home to save myself the money, but I see all this stuff everywhere and I don't know what to buy/if more money = better quality.

With dumb bells I don't think it matters, since for working out it's just how heavy they are. Mine were fairly cheap and I got them in a sale. I don't know where you're from but these are similar to the ones I have and about the same price:

https://www.sportsdirect.com/everlast-12kg-dumbbell-set-762916?colcode=76291699

I'll probably get a heavier set of weights once I'm a bit stronger and they'll be slightly more expensive.

I also do a lot of body weight exercises like planks, pull-ups, and yoga. And I think my next investment will be a pull-up bar. You can get a lot of stuff really cheap on Craigslist too.

Ooh that's not a bad price. I am in Canada but I am pretty sure I have seen that brand here.

Thanks! :)

Haha, I can't do pull ups at ALL. Lunges, squats, planks, yep. Pull ups are my nemesis.

No worries! I appreciate all the detail! Thanks for responding. I should definitely try just exercising once a week before trying to go hard about everything else!

This feels like such a privileged thing to complain about to me especially considering I have a friend who's out of a job but. I keep getting really long shifts on the weekend and it's exhausting. I prefer the five hour shifts that I can get through easier. I like having a job so I don't complain but... just... gnnnn
