I'm loathe to say it, but I do think some of it involves generational attitudes about moralizing. I mean, it used to be considered a pretty lame thing to do, and recently it seems like a rite of passage for popularity.

But yes, there have always been ship wars and self-righteous people and people using morality as a weapon against ships and characters they don't like.

I'm generally really skeptical of generational arguments, especially when they're made from the outside looking in, and especially when other explanations are ready at hand. So, this particular example is no exception.

OK, but world views do change on a macro level over the years. It's something that happens.

sure, but it should take very strong evidence for us to believe that. it's an idea that we should be skeptical of, because it's the kind of idea that is very easy and very satisfying and very easy to over-fit, and because it's an extremely large claim - a claim about the general tendencies of extremely large groups of people.

I might, yes. That doesn't really conflict with anything I'm saying. In 10 years, we'll have a lot more evidence to go on.
