There's a live action FMA movie?

...See, this is a case where I really wish an anime movie would be made somewhere other than Japan. It's important to the setting and characters that it echo early 1900s western Europe, specifically Germany and France.

The weird thing is why Holllywood seems adamant to adapt animes/mangas where the Japanese-ness of the canon is highly crucial. Why can't they buy the adaptation rights for shit like this? I'm sure Arakawa-sensei wouldn't mind boatloads of money.

This is just a guess, but I feel like the way that anime adaptations get made in Hollywood is by being someone's pet project

So i imagine it's probably mostly a result of what things a powerful person in Hollywood randomly falls in love with (with some exceptions I'm sure - there are things like Death Note that at least theoretically make sense)

I dunno dude, even things like Death Note- the canon worked because Japan generally has a culture that encouraged falling in line, not making a fuss or standing out, which is why Light and his death note felt like a manifestation of that wanting to speak up and stand up for your beliefs but not being able to due to societal pressure. There's no such cultural implication in a USian society, and definitely not to the same extent, not enough that it made the whole premise as biting/intriguing.

What's novel about a white USian male getting his hands on a mass killing device?

I mean, that's a good line, but a death note is clearly not the same thing as a machine gun.

I think a lot of the cultural details are slightly different, and you'd definitely have to change some bits and pieces slightly and emphasize slightly different things, but the fundamental conceit is powerful enough and universal enough that I think you could easily make it work. It's relatively translatable.

There wasn't really much stopping him from saying "fuck it" to that pressure until he got a supernatural notebook. He never showed any inclination to go into politics or law enforcement prior to that, so it isn't as though he was being kept down by The System.

No, I meant Light symbolises that desire, the impact of the narrative is a wish-fulfilment for its audience--the people that are being kept down by the system.
It's like how jdorama like Hanzawa Naoki doesn't really translate to international audience, cause 'what's so special about arguing with your boss?' When for domestic audience it is as far fetched and as such it felt 'special' watching somebody do that on TV.

Yup, clearly it's just about somebody powerful reading something, liking it, and thought nothing further than- we got the money and the CGI to do it.

I still have (very faint) hope for that Monster adaptation though. Hopefully with everybody speaking German.
