Sorry to be a downer at Christmas. :(So after going back and forth to the vets and a load of blood tests, I finally found out what's been wrong with my cat. His kidneys are starting to fail. Not sure how long he has left but it's basically been said that it will be a case of keeping him as happy/comfortable as possible, until the day comes where the kindest option is to have him put to sleep.

I'm heartbroken. I cried so much yesterday that my eyes still hurt. I know that I should be grateful that I've got some sort of warning and have the chance to make his last days as good as possible, but knowing that this will be his last Christmas is breaking me. We took him in from a neglectful owner just a few years ago and it just doesn't feel like we've had enough time. I thought we'd have years to go.

And I'm crying again.

I'm so, so sorry. All the hugs for you. Poor kitty. But at least you are able to give him some very happy days, and at least he is spending his last years happy, safe, taken care of, and spoiled. I'm sure he's grateful in his kitty way. You did a good thing. Take care of yourself. Let us know if you need anything.

Thank you so much. <3 He is going to be spoiled rotten, I guarantee. I'm not letting him out of my sight at the moment. We got him a new litter tray today (he's always been an outdoors/indoors cat but I don't want him to have to go out in the cold) and his first reaction was to try to eat the litter. Like a kid in a sandbox, bless him. He's one of the funniest cats I've ever had, he just makes everyone smile. :)

Aw. He sounds like a sweetheart. My cat that I've only had for a month still thinks headphone cords are things to chew and feet are things to pounce on. And she is horribly offended by the leash and thinks she should be allowed outside without it. But she's spoiled and hopefully happy, which is what all cats deserve. While they are with us, they should be loved, especially the ones that we get from bad situations. Your little guy is warm and safe and taken care of. He is happy. That's all we can do.

Thank you. :( On the bright side he's being spoiled even more than usual and getting constant cuddles, so he's pretty happy for the moment.

Oh, god, that sucks :(. I know exactly what you're going through-I went through that with my own cat last year. Your comment about feeling like you haven't had enough time especially hit home.

And don't feel bad about mourning, either. Even with time to prepare, that doesn't make this sort of situation any easier. Cry and grieve all you want to.

He sounds like he's got a lot of love from you and your family, though, so I've no doubt you'll do what you can to make his last days a little easier, and make good memories worth enjoying and cherishing. Condolences and hugs to you and your family and cat.

This. It is okay to mourn pets. They are family members. We love them. Preparation doesn't make it any better. It still hurts.

Thank you. :( I'm sorry you had to go through that, too. It just feels so unfair. I know that no amount of time ever feels like enough when it comes to pets. I could spend 20 more years with this little guy happily. He's just such a ray of sunshine.

We're talking to the vets later this week about how to tell if/when it's getting close to that time. I can't bear the idea of him suffering so I want to know exactly what signs to look out for so he can go peacefully.

I'm so sorry. This is always difficult to deal with. I know it's not much consolation, but at least now you know and can make sure he's comfortable and happy for the remainder of his life, rather than the constant stress of endless vet visits and tests.

Thank you. <3 I am grateful that we know, definitely. My partner's cat died very suddenly and unexpectedly, which was so horrible. He said to me last night that we're "going to make this the best Christmas ever" for him. :)

That is the worst. It's so damn *hard*.

But you love him, and he's happy with you, and you gave him a good home. It doesn't help much or fix anything, but he's happy, and that's all that counts.
Love him up as much as you can.

(Hugs!) Thank you so much. It really does suck. I'm grateful we have time to prepare for it, at least. My partner's cat passed away really suddenly from a heart defect; one hour he was fine, the next he was gone, and it was such a horrible shock.

He is going to get so loved up it's unbelievable. Me and my partner spoil him anyway but since yesterday he's basically cuddled up with me constantly. And there are loads of treats under the tree for him. :) Thank you again.

I know how this feels, had to put down my 17 year old cat when we got back from holiday this year and that sucked, but we made sure she was comfortable in her last moments and it's the hardest thing to convince yourself to do but it is for the best.

Just know that you loved them with all your heart and somewhere in there they know that, it's why they stay with us for their whole lives.

Thank you so much. <3 I'm sorry you had to go through that. It must have been so difficult, but you did the right thing. I don't know how I'm going to cope when the day actually comes since just the idea of it makes me tear up so much.

I hope he does know that. He was treated pretty badly by his last owner so I hope he's happier with us. :( It sucks knowing that the majority of his life was spent in a place where they didn't love him at all. My poor baby.

For what it's worth, we went through that not too long ago with our cat. The old guy lived almost two years after we were told his kidneys were starting to fail, and while he lost a lot of weight and slowed down a bunch, he never seemed to be in any pain and was able to pass away comfortably at home.

So, I mean, I guess what I'm saying is, prepare for the worst, but he may surprise you. <3

I'm so sorry. You've obviously made your cat very happy though and will bring him happiness even at the end of his life, and that's a big thing. But don't feel bad about being a "downer." Not everything about holidays has to be "good cheer." I'm just sorry you have to go through this.

*offers hugs* Went through this several years ago. We got a good year more with him and everything we read said it wasn't painful or hard on him so we didn't feel like we were being selfish keeping him comfortable.

*hugs* I'm so, so sorry. Your cat is lucky, though, to have an owner who loves him so much. You've made his last years happy, comfortable, and better than they ever would have been had you not rescued him. Though your time with him is going to be unfairly cut short, I bet neither of you would trade the time you have had together for anything.
