Instances of people using internet slang irl

Tell me about your experiences.

Did a double take in the doctor's office when a guy said buttmad while I was waiting.

That seems pretty natural to me. A lot of animals have protective coloration to let you know to stay away from them.

Maybe it's a medical condition.

Way too many instances of people saying Hashtag ______ in real life. Really annoying.

I do this sometimes. Usually when I catch someone doing something silly and are not sorry about it. So I'll look at them and go, hashtag sorry not sorry? And then they nod.

That's about it.

I do this occasionally, and I have no regrets. But then, I also always laugh when I hear other people use it irl as well.

Lol, omg, idk

(Anonymous) 2017-12-23 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I've heard all three and all of them annoy me. It's not like you're saving time or effort, all of them have the same amount of syllables. Also, I don't really like the shorthand anyway, but they sound really silly out loud.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-23 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I gotta admit, I say OMG sometimes. I like how it sounds.

Okay, but I'd probably roll my eyes if I heard you say it - though, since I don't know you, likely not where you could see me. Some things just grate on a person, while other people like them, you know?

So do they say EL-O-EL for LOL? I always pronounce it as one monosyllabic word in my mind, and I have said it out loud a few times, but like "loll."

I've heard both, but I was thinking about EL-O-EL when I wrote this.

God, you'd hate me, I say those all the time. Pronouncing 'lol' as "loll', 'omg' as 'ahmg', but 'idk' i just say the letters. I say brb too, pronouncing it as "birb".

I wouldn't hate you or anything. But I would grit my teeth when I heard them. I don't know why they bug me, I don't mind other acronyms and initialisms.

Re: Lol, omg, idk

(Anonymous) 2017-12-24 11:04 am (UTC)(link)
I use lol sometimes, but only ever as loll, never El-Oh-El. I have friends who like to make a lot of gently mocking jokes. Like, friendly ribbing kind of comments. And because I usually don't actually find the jokes funny, but I still feel the need to respond in some way, I find a very dry "loll" uniquely useful. I guess I could just say "ha" once, very dryly, and it would accomplish about the same thing. But I'm not used to saying "ha" when I'm not actually laughing, whereas I'm very used to using "loll" for situations where I'm not actually laughing, so.

In that context, both with the pronunciation and the way it's used, I don't think that would bug me quite as much.

The first time I heard someone use internet slang irl was yeeears ago. Maybe 10 years ago.

People used to say "FAIL" all the time. Now I hear people say "oh my god, I can't even!" or "bae" or anything else that makes me cringe just thinking about it.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-24 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Did bae start as internet slang?

Butthurt

"Epic fail" and "tits or GTFO" (thankfully with the first word only implied), both from my seventy-something dad.

It takes the same number of syllables to say out loud as 'in real life', but irl is irl now.

My younger sisters were talking about "manic pixie dream girls" today, made all the weirder by how we're outside the Anglosphere.

I was about to say that I think both that and "butthurt" have become a thing off the internet by now. But now that I think of it I haven't heard either from people who aren't on the internet much. (And I actually know a lot of people like that.)

I use lol out loud. I've heard my husband and his best friend use butthurt. It's mostly things like that.

... I'm 1000% guilty of saying 'lol' and 'brb' irl. *embarrassed* I mean, I'm usually kidding around and I only ever do it at home but I guess that's weird. ^^;;;;

I use "irl" all the time. Probably some other stuff too.
