I didn't mind Luke, but I also don't have forty years of idealized canon in my head.

& Reddit has, unsurprisingly, been pretty bad about it. I truly had someone tell me "I don't care if they're black white indian or whatever but it was FORCED DIVERSITY!!!."

and yet no one can tell me how it's """"forced""", oddly enough.

Yeah. Like, is there any form of diversity that people wouldn't call forced? It's a criticism that's equally applicable to any diversity whatsoever. So the complaint really reduces down to just being opposed to diversity as such.

Yep. Laser swords and space travel and fights are real, but having more than one person of color and, god forbid, one of them be a woman of color, well, that's just unbelievable.

I haven't seen the movie, but there's definitely instances in major movies where tokenism is an issue. Additionally, Disney's handling of Beauty and the Beast's gay character (gay if you look for it and to get cookies, but not enough to offend the masses) makes skeptical of the why. To be fair, I don't hold Disney in high regard and assume most of their choices are profit oriented.

Sure, but I think tokenism is a fundamentally distinct argument from forced diversity. Similar in some ways, but much more limited.

That's a constant theme whenever you have majority female or non-white leads. It's "forced, in your face, SJW-points diversity".

But when it's all white dudes, it's just natural.

I hope everyone else there was at least able to milk some "May the Force(d Diversity) be with you" jokes out of that.

I didn't *like* where they went with Luke's character, but I didn't find it particularly OOC, either. He was always a bit of a smartass, and no one does jaded better than a disappointed idealist.

That's pretty much my opinion about Luke in this movie.

Overall I really liked the movie, but I can see reasons besides bigoted ones that people might not like it. That said, it sucks that bigots are complaining about diversity like it somehow made the movie bad.

I think it would have been alright if it had been better written. The way it was, it just seemed like it was done for shock value instead of actual character development.
