Apparently, dogs can be healthy on a vegetarian diet.

DA

I believe dogs can thrive on a vegetarian diet. Especially if the vegetarian diet includes eggs. However, the dogs I am speaking of are pet dogs with owners and a family who can watch for side effects and add nutrition and take it to the vet as necessary. To switch to an entirely plant-based diet, you need to adjust the diet carefully to suit each dog, since entirely-plant based diets would never happen in nature.

Giant dog shelters in LA are not going to be able to do this. If they tried to implement this on a large scale with very broad standardized plant diets, dogs would die.

Vegan != vegetarian.

But vegetarian and vegan aren’t the same thing. Eggs and maybe some dairy (yogurt or other fermented/cultured dairy contain less lactose to fuck with their digestion) would make up some of the deficiencies of a vegan diet and require less in the way of supplements. And cats will sicken and die without meat, and do best on a diet that’s 95% meat, and mostly organ meat, at that. I’ve been a vegetarian for over 20 years and vegans should either keep rabbits or understand that the only creatures they can make follow their preferred diet are themselves.

Rabbits aren't great pets either unless you can accept the fact that they don't like being picked up. people with little kids shouldn't have rabbits for that reason.

My family raised rabbits for awhile, but they were mostly for food purposes not pets. I remember really enjoying them as a kid.

sounds like you were one of those unusual kids who actually didn't try to pick them up.

No, I picked them up. I grew up on a farm and handling rabbits was just a part of that. I'm almost afraid to ask how you tried to pick them up.

I didn't. I knew you weren't supposed to.

You can as long as you pick them up by the extra skin of their neck, they kinda go lax and then you can move them around as you need to.

They can, but that's not the same as a vegan diet, and it's not cheap.
