I hope they become friends too, but I'm slightly worried that it'll split the group along gender lines because the girls have to do girly things all the time and so are completely apart from the boys for good chunks of plot. Or everyone suddenly gets all self-conscious and the two girls are a separate unit from the boys because cooties. Or something.

Don't get me wrong, a scene here and there of female bonding is great, but for the most part I'd like to see a group of kids of mixed gender hanging out and fighting monsters and what-not. I don't want the girls being sent off into a Nancy-Johnathan-esque sideline while the boys investigate the main mystery. Just let them all be a gang together.

Why would you think that? Max is a tomboy and acted like the boys during this season.

They're getting to the age when tomboys either cement that, or tend to drift the other way pretty hard. So, while there's a good chance she'll remain Mad Max, there's also a not insignificant chance she'll become Queen Maxine, instead.
