Agree 10000%

I think given Eleven's mental state and total lack of socialization, it made sense at the time? I also expect that further character development will happen.

I get that the rival girl is a terrible trope, but it's terrible because it's overdone and unjustified on most of the places it's used.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-23 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
IMO, once a trope gets to that level of being overused and terrible, it's hard to meaningfully justify it and make it good. You need to question it and complicate it, not just textually support it, you know?

She spent all her time in the woods watching old romantic dramas/comedies.

^THIS. I'm not against using well worn tropes but honestly, writers have to try extra hard to combat just how awful and clichéd they can be. A lot of them don't bother, unfortunately.

LOL, given her lack of socialization on top of her age, I would more quickly jump to her not being capable of romantic jealousy and being confused by society's perception that girls and boys are never just friends.

"Boys and girls can never be just friends" is something kids learn from the time they're born. I doubt even her time in captivity kept her from learning something about it.

And her socialization after she escaped didn't meet with a lot of resistance from her. She immediately decided she was pretty in a dress and wig because the boys said she was pretty. She was a passive entity who didn't form her own thoughts about what she saw, rather absorbing ideas given to her like a sponge.

I haven't watched 2 yet, but...

(Anonymous) 2017-12-23 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Was her dislike for the new girl because she was female or because she was new? Because in the first season, didn't Eleven have insecurities about herself fitting in as a new member of the group? When you're the newest friend and an even newer person comes along, I think it's normal to worry about being replaced by them.

Or maybe it's just me cause I'm a jealous bitch. *shrug*

Re: I haven't watched 2 yet, but...

(Anonymous) 2017-12-23 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
A little of both? She was jealous of Max and Mike in a way that probably wouldn't have been the case if Max had been a Maxwell instead of a Maxine, but it was definitely more of a fear of being replaced thing than a "now I'm falling asleep and she's calling a cab" thing.

Re: I haven't watched 2 yet, but...

(Anonymous) 2017-12-23 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree it's normal to feel envious about being replaced. Since Eleven had been away for a year and then as soon as she found her (boy)friend, he was with this other girl (alone) in the gym hall who was skating circles around him, and so Eleven got upset and lashed out by knocking this random new girl off her skateboard lol.

I'd say its justifyable considering she is 12/13 and is insecure/doesnt feel wanted/has issues socialising compared to the normal cliche of "two socialites just jealous over a guy" for drama -- and then the fact she was confined to this shack where she just watched TV all day so the only exposure to that kinda thing happening would be something cliche like that, but I'm not sure if the creators were thinking that far lol.

Im assuming s3 will 'heal' the cliche like they did with Steve not being the stereotypical jock/jerk type character as he cleaned up his act and made the effort to better himself in the story, since Eleven and Max working together would be the shit. \O/ \O/ \O/

Same, OP. All the same in the world.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-23 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
So unrealistic, too, I mean that never happens IRL.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-23 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
but we're talking about stories, not reality

Uh, have you seen this show? A lot of things happen in it that do not happen in real life, because it's sci-fi/horror.

There's already an abundance of female characters being needlessly catty bitches to each other in most media as it is, anon, no need to be threatened when some people out there want, y'know, some other facets of female relationships explored for once. Because god forbid women be varied.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-23 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope they become friends too, but I'm slightly worried that it'll split the group along gender lines because the girls have to do girly things all the time and so are completely apart from the boys for good chunks of plot. Or everyone suddenly gets all self-conscious and the two girls are a separate unit from the boys because cooties. Or something.

Don't get me wrong, a scene here and there of female bonding is great, but for the most part I'd like to see a group of kids of mixed gender hanging out and fighting monsters and what-not. I don't want the girls being sent off into a Nancy-Johnathan-esque sideline while the boys investigate the main mystery. Just let them all be a gang together.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-23 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Why would you think that? Max is a tomboy and acted like the boys during this season.

Yes! Thank you. I hated this too. Especially with Max so excited to meet her.

Chiming in with another "same" here. I get that it made a kind of sense in context, but I still rolled my eyes.

I liked El's reaction to Max in S1. I think it makes a lot of sense that she would feel a knee-jerk jealousy and protectiveness of her place in the goup (and especially in Mike's life). I mean, they're literally the only friends she's ever had, and Mike's the first guy she's ever had romantic feelings for, and considering everything else she's been through, it makes sense that her place in all of that feels unstable and she has intense fear about losing those connections somehow.

But I do hope that El and Max's relationship evolves towards something friendlier in S3. I would love to see Max actually have a talk with Eleven at some point, and maybe help explain El's own feelings to her a bit - help her get some intellectual context for her feelings, especially her jealousy.
