So unrealistic, too, I mean that never happens IRL.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-23 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
but we're talking about stories, not reality

(Anonymous) 2017-12-23 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
....yes. And?

(Anonymous) 2017-12-23 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Just because something happens in real life doesn't mean that it's justified on narrative grounds - which are the appropriate grounds to use to evaluate stories.

There's no such thing as "appropriate" or "inappropriate" grounds for evaluating stories. There are many ways to evaluate stories.

I don't watch the show, but I like my media to reflect realistic human interactions, and this scenario sounds realistic to me. I don't like aspirational media because it feels phony to me. Obviously you don't have to agree with any of this.

what's the realistic way for a little girl with psychic powers to act

(Anonymous) 2017-12-23 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
This sounds realistic to me:

But, like, if this happened in real life, do you think her psychic powers would change her behavior at all

da

Why would they? She is still a child/pre-teen with hormones. Hell, she would be more likely react on an emotional level because she was never taught how to handle emotions correctly. She acted COMPLETELY in line with other tantrums we saw her give (knocking Max off the skateboard just like she slammed doors shut during fights with Hopper).

But we're not talking about what other things happen in the story. That's narrative.

We're talking about how realistic it is, compared to real life, because we want media to reflect realistic human interactions. So I'm just asking what human interactions are like in real life for people with psychic powers. It's a simple question.

I think there are good reasons to believe Eleven doesn't know how to handle emotions and I like that they emphasized that other things are more important to her, but in the end they still didn't have to go there and I wish they hadn't.

Hell, she would be more likely react on an emotional level because she was never taught how to handle emotions correctly.

This, this, so much this, thank you! This is why I really liked how El reacted to Max. Because I just don't think she was equipped to know how to conceptualize and deal with the feelings Max was inspiring. They were a completely new thing for her, so she just reacted, very instinctively.

IDK, I don't watch the show, so I don't know anything about her powers. Maybe go argue with the people upthread who do watch the show and find this scenario realistic rather than purely trope-driven?

(Anonymous) 2017-12-23 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh, have you seen this show? A lot of things happen in it that do not happen in real life, because it's sci-fi/horror.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-24 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, have you heard of acceptable and unacceptable breaks from reality? If it literally can't happen in real life (supernatural things), it's an acceptable break from reality. If it could happen in real life but is highly unlikely to because it isn't realistic (anything related to human nature and behavior goes in this category), it's bad writing.

There's already an abundance of female characters being needlessly catty bitches to each other in most media as it is, anon, no need to be threatened when some people out there want, y'know, some other facets of female relationships explored for once. Because god forbid women be varied.
