Wait, is this a movie where divorced parents get back together? Dammit, if it is, that kills all interest I had in seeing it.

Not OP, but no, it isn't. It's about a boy's journey to the land of the dead and family is a major theme of the movie, especially familial love and the bonds between one's immediate and extended family. I can understand why it made OP so sad, especially since there's a part in the movie where a familial bond is repaired.

What the other anon said. The movie is specifically about a boy wanting to become a musician, but the theme of family is the emotional backbone of the whole plot, with the (living and dead) members all forming a bond with his musical ambitions later on.

It's far from being one about divorced parents.
