Same, I can't stand that guy. Anthony Hopkins will always be Hannibal to me.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-27 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I like all three, Anthony, Mads, and Gaspard, even I prefer the book!Hannibal.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-27 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I don't see the appeal to him at all.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-27 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
He is probably the UGLIEST guy on TV!

(Anonymous) 2017-12-27 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
He looks like a frog.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-27 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
He looks like a less attractive Putin.

And this has what to do with his acting skills? Hopkins isn't my type either. I just find the character interesting. Mads is my personal favorite, but I like Hopkins too.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-27 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
It seems like a pretty natural and harmless misunderstanding?

(Anonymous) 2017-12-27 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it is the most recent version.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-27 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
And most of the fans are even younger than the movie version, so most of them weren't alive when the movie came out to the cinema.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-27 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone who was old enough to see Silence of the Lambs in theaters when it first came out would now be at least 43 years old, so yeah.

So, wait, according to you young people assuming you're talking about the show they watched two years ago instead of books and movies from 30 years ago aka a time when they weren't even born is so terrible? Okay.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-27 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I don't even like that actor but I enjoy butthurt Hopkins purists.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-27 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Hop-nickers-in-a-twist-kins.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-27 08:51 am (UTC)(link)
+1

(Anonymous) 2017-12-27 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not part of that fandom, but I'd probably assume that's the version people would be talking about since it's the most recent.

I don't get the hate for his looks either. He looks like a classy middle-aged european guy, and he's in pretty good shape as far as I can tell too.

I don't watch any version of Hannibal but I saw Mads in something else that had a sex scene and he was looking pretty good. But he does have plenty of fans, even if they're not showing up here to argue.

Yep, the guy is fit and moves with the grace of a dancer.

I mean, if they're talking about the character I do assume they're talking about either the Mads version or the book version. Mostly because the movies are pretty fucking old at this point.

But also I think Mads because while SotL is one of my favorite movies ever I thought Anthony Hopkins fucking sucked as Dr. Lecter and brought down the whole goddamn movie, and the few scenes I've watched of Brian Cox in the role weren't any better.

Huh. I've never heard/seen someone say that before. It occurs to me that I...don't entirely disagree. I've always just kind of gone along with the pervading idea that Hopkins did A Very Good Job and it was An Iconic Performance, because I don't care a whole lot about SOTL either way (it was good, but I'm far from passionate about it). But when I actually stop and think about Hopkins' performance, from a modern perspective (and especially when compared to Mads' performance), I just find it OTT and hard to take seriously.

Why?

(Anonymous) 2017-12-27 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
It's the most recent version. If someone brought up Wonder Woman, I would assume they meant Gal Gadot's version, unless they said something to indicate otherwise.

Re: Why?

(Anonymous) 2017-12-27 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes but in that example you're talking about a movie that a lot of people saw vs a show not many alive today have watched. The opposite is true for Hannibal Lecter; literally three generations have now seen Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal but only a few million people ever watched the TV show. It seems perfectly natural to me that people would think of the most popular incarnation. I can honestly say I don't know anyone who would assume someone was talking about Mads and I have two friends who were active in the fandom.

Re: Why?

(Anonymous) 2017-12-28 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Now ask yourself: fandom is populated with teens and young adults, so which one are they more familiar with, old movies no one talks about anymore or a tv show that was Tumblr's fave?

(Anonymous) 2017-12-29 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
I adore the guy, but in The Hunt or A Royal Affair. Is his turn as Hannibal worth investigating.
