I mean, if they're talking about the character I do assume they're talking about either the Mads version or the book version. Mostly because the movies are pretty fucking old at this point.

But also I think Mads because while SotL is one of my favorite movies ever I thought Anthony Hopkins fucking sucked as Dr. Lecter and brought down the whole goddamn movie, and the few scenes I've watched of Brian Cox in the role weren't any better.

Huh. I've never heard/seen someone say that before. It occurs to me that I...don't entirely disagree. I've always just kind of gone along with the pervading idea that Hopkins did A Very Good Job and it was An Iconic Performance, because I don't care a whole lot about SOTL either way (it was good, but I'm far from passionate about it). But when I actually stop and think about Hopkins' performance, from a modern perspective (and especially when compared to Mads' performance), I just find it OTT and hard to take seriously.
