The original trilogy is to sci-fi movies what Tolkien was to fantasy. It's because of those things that we got all the subsequent things. You don't have to like them but it's ridiculous to pretend their impact was minimal. I personally cannot stand Tolkien's writing but I couldn't be more appreciative for it because the fantasy books I devour today never would have been written/published if not for him.
