I don't understand the appeal of Star Wars. They were fairly revolutionary for their time, I admit, but if the original trilogy came out today, they'd be panned as another mediocre sci fi franchise. The prequels were utter trash, and the new movies coming out are just okay. People love the shit out of Star Wars, but I think it's mostly nostalgia factor.

I mean, people would judge them more harshly based on the fact that the special effects and writing would be 40 years out of date, yes.

But I don't think they're mediocre movies, especially not New Hope and Empire. They're extremely well made space adventure movies. They're really entertaining, they're in a genre that a lot of people like, and they have a setting that a lot of people find compelling. And that's exactly the kind of thing that a lot of people are going to like a lot. The new movies aren't revolutionary, but they're still fundamentally satisfying to a lot of people, even if they're not other peoples' cup of tea.

I mean, the question of why Star Wars appeals to a lot of people just seems pretty obvious.

Why act like you don't understand when the answer is LITERALLY in your comment? "They were fairly revolutionary for their time"

Why do people like the Beatles? If they were a band today, they would be lost in a sea of similar sounding music!

Why is Citizen Kane so renowned? If it was released today, people would only talk about how long it is.

Why do people care about the iPhone? If it was released today, people would only want to buy Androids.

The original trilogy is to sci-fi movies what Tolkien was to fantasy. It's because of those things that we got all the subsequent things. You don't have to like them but it's ridiculous to pretend their impact was minimal. I personally cannot stand Tolkien's writing but I couldn't be more appreciative for it because the fantasy books I devour today never would have been written/published if not for him.

They're just plain fun. They're not especially deep or complex, they're just enjoyable to watch and entertaining, which is all that really matters.

Oh, shocking, different tastes are different.

they'd be panned as another mediocre sci fi franchise.

If the original trilogy hadn't come out in the 70s, there wouldn't have been a sea of mediocre but high-tech sci fi franchises. Star Wars was pretty much the template for the genre as we know it today. Those were the movies that convinced studios that SF films could yield metric fucktonnes of money if they had enough mass appeal and were marketed effectively.
