they'd be panned as another mediocre sci fi franchise.

If the original trilogy hadn't come out in the 70s, there wouldn't have been a sea of mediocre but high-tech sci fi franchises. Star Wars was pretty much the template for the genre as we know it today. Those were the movies that convinced studios that SF films could yield metric fucktonnes of money if they had enough mass appeal and were marketed effectively.
