How open are you about your fannish activities with ppl irl, fs?

(Anonymous) 2017-12-30 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Me, I'd discuss canon and admit to being a fan, but not of being active in fandom.

After decades, I still can't do it.

I'll discuss canon, but not admit to reading fanfiction (unless it's traditionally published, like when other people write Sherlock Holmes stories) ir writing it. I don't go to cons, but I wouldn't discuss it openly if I did.

I'm open about being a nerd but not necessarily about fandom, if that makes sense.

It depends on the person. I'll admit to liking certain shows and I'll wear an anime shirt now and then, but I'd never admit to being an active shipper and writing fic or stuff like that. Unless the other person starts talking about shipping first and then I don't shut up about it. If it's somebody I know, like a close friend, then I really don't shut up about it.

pretty much the same with me except one of my fandoms instead of anime.

How is discussing canon and admitting to being a fan not being active in fandom?

I don't make a point of hiding my lunch book, and I just got an episode recommendation from my supervisor, so I guess pretty open.

The word "fandom" is clearly overloaded but I assume they mean fandom in some more specific subcultural sense.

Like, for instance, you can clearly talk about a distinct mode of fandom and a distinct fandom subculture that is marked by (among other things) writing and consuming fanfiction. And "fandom" is sometimes used to specifically refer to that specific thing.

Depends on the person. Most of them would not understand what fanfic and such is.

I'm open about being a gamer, and I have a few pieces of merch and stuff, and I don't have a problem getting super detailed talking about anything actually *in* the game (like mechanics, lore, etc.)

But I'd never mention something like fanfiction. I'd hesitate to talk about it even among people who leaned toward fannishness, just because in my mind it's pretty fringe, like admitting you're a fursuiter or something.

Hasn't seemed to impact my career negatively so far, nonny. I started my adult life a homeless junkie, started a company with a few hundred bucks to my name, and now I've got a cool half million sitting in my savings account.

But I appreciate your concern about my future and emotional well-being.

What's the matter, Rudolph? Did no one ever let you join in any reindeer games?

Poor baby, that must have stung so.

You mean like at least 50-60 % of that same generation? It's cute that you think videogames, on of the biggest entertainment industries in the world, are still some nerdy niche thing.

Somewhat open.

I've told family members that I read and write fic.

Discussing the canon and coming up with speculation/theories as to what could happen are things I'll talk about openly.

The shipping squee I keep to myself because I don't really think anyone else will get it, though my bf knows I ship and likes to try and guess what I came out of a show/movie shipping. But with other people the most I'll ever say is something like 'I think they're cute' if there's a canon ship I love in the Thing we're discussing.

A small group of real life friends started off as fandom friends, but it wasn't a shipping thing back then in our group. A couple of them have shared with me that they read and/or write fic. I don't know that it really comes up anymore at all.

I sometimes send silly character pictures to friends who share interests in those characters, or discuss what's happening on screen currently. Nothing that I might put in a secret here though.

Depends on the fandom.

My parents and brother know I'm an SF&F fan and they are, too, and we've attended some cons together. They are all perfectly areare that I have some fandom involvement. That doesn't mean I share ALL my fandoms and fannish stuff with them, and not always out of a desire to keep things secret - often just because it doesn't come up (I live 6 hours away). We (mainly my mom, brother, and I - Dad's a fan who doesn't do fandom) do talk about movies/TV/books/comics we like and stuff we read on the internet. My mother and I were involved in LotR fandom together for a while, posting on the same message board and aware of each other's handles.

I have a work friend who is a completely MASSIVE X-Files fan and doesn't hide it from anyone, so I'm open with her about my X-Files fannishness (she will always out-fan me, though), and fairly open with some of our mutual work friends, since they're used to her talking about the X-Files anyway. I don't consider being an X-Files fan or shipping Mulder/Scully weird or embarrassing or anything since it's a pretty mainstream fannish position to have.

Same.

Though sometimes I get too excited and fandom things slip out. Like at Panda Express, where the guy was telling me how he and his girlfriend cosplayed as Marco and Star and how they liked watching Descendants, I couldn't help but be excited to talk with him.

I would be, if anyone cared to know. Although I'm not terribly active in fandom at the moment, either.

Yeah, I'll let people know if I'm into a certain thing, but I won't divulge that I'm into the fandom or write fanfic for it and stuff like that.
