Re: Media things that still make you angry

I love his writing. I remember the days when almost everyone loved his writing. The West Wing was phenomenal. I'm still very unclear on what, when, and why the tides turned on Sorkin.

I think part of it is that his style of writing is very similar across all his shows - he consistently uses a lot of the same tricks, the same beats, the same types of characters, the same emotional throughlines, the same quips and the same style and all of it. All of his shows can feel slightly same-y.

And Newsroom and Studio 60, the two shows that he made after West Wing aren't - in my opinion, and it seems to be a common opinion - very good at all. So in other words, he made two shows that share the same general tone and the same quips and the same emotional beats and the same kind of characters as TWW and Sportsnight, except now those things are in a context that's not good. It makes his whole style seem like a cheap trick.

And then the other thing is, just personally, I think there's an underlying sense of righteousness in much of Sorkin's writing - in his characters and in the way that he talks about complex moral and social issues. And when I was younger, that was really appealing. But as I get older, it seems more and more self-righteous and arrogant and unappealing - even when I agree with the underlying moral point. Even when his characters aren't morally perfect, they still exist at the end of the day in universes constructed to prove and sustain their righteousness. I can't stand it.
