Why do people care so much if Pluto is a planet, anyway? Pluto is still there, all that changed is the classification people gave it.

I kind of get it, because I'm already a curmudgeon in my 20's and part of me is all "Well -I- learned it this way so that's how it is to me." There is something viscerally affecting about having something basic you learned at a young age and being told "Nope, that's not how it actually is." The fact that it's a minor classification issue probably makes it worse, since then it feels like scientists are just fucking with your perception of the universe for no good reason. But like... I recognize that's my personal problem. Science cannot and should not be held to standards of "Well I feel this way" and "It's been this way up until now."

The change was kind of arbitrary in that plutinos and dwarf planets were split off in their own categories but we still have rocky planets in the same category as giants. And now that we're looking at the possibility of an ice giant and a mars-sized planet sharing the same orbital space (in resonance) as plutionos and TNOs, the "clear the orbit" criteria is looking weaker.
