For a regular doctor or anything gyno-related, I default to female, but I've had both pelvic and breast exams from male doctors and it was no big deal. For something like an opthamologist, I could not care less about gender.

I mainly care about how good the doctor is at explaining things and how much they listen and seem to care about my questions. The best doctor I ever had was a guy who was great at explaining things. I went to him when my regular doctor was on maternity leave. I had never had a pelvic exam or pap smear with a male doctor before and thought it might be weird, but we spent the whole time being chatty about blood-pressure stuff. Whether you think that's funny or odd, at least it wasn't awkward. When my regular doctor took a different job, I would have switched to him in a flash, but he wasn't taking patients. My new doctor (I picked a woman) seems okay so far. Shopping around for a doctor isn't always very feasible. I don't have to go to the doctor more than twice a year, so it would take me ages to try different doctors.
