I think when most people say they ship a pairing, they mean romantically. (When I say I ship people platonically I'm kind of joking about it being a ship and just mean I'm interested in the characters interacting, and I suppose the definition of "ship" might be changing to encompass that meaning, too.) I don't know if that makes shipping inherently romanticizing.
