It’s explained that warlocks and witches and sorcerers generally have ridiculous names, and after her mother split up with her powerful warlock father, they were going by her mom’s maiden name until she remarried, and her mother and everyone else called her Rae.

This is one of the few books I know of where “heroine finds out about her super-special magical heritage” is actually “heroine already knows about her super special magical heritage but doesn’t do anything with it until it’s that or die.” Magic in the book seems to have so many pitfalls and side-effects as well as making users targets that it’s not “look how amazing I am with my magic,” as “Oh shit I have powerful magic, how long until I crack and they find me naked and chowing down on a baby in the woods?”
