I hated the rule that if ANYONE got into a fight during lunch, we were all punished the next day by having a quiet lunch.

FUcking this. Way to make kids who had nothing to do with fights feel awful and as if they had done something wrong.

In high school, you weren't allowed to have even OTC meds on your person. I was like fuck that, it's allergy season and I need antihistamines to function, goddammit...

I never understood that. We weren't even allowed to bring glue. It didn't do anything to fix the drug problem.

My school was the same. I used to get nasty headaches just before my period and the school nurse wasn't allowed to give me anything to alleviate the pain because I didn't have a doctor's note. I ended up bumming aspirin off the school's chip guy because I was too chicken to bring my own aspirin to school.

This. My periods were brutal in high school; Midol was allowed but it didn't do dick, and my doctor didn't want to put me on BC until I hit 16. So I'd stick ziplock baggie of ibuprofen in my bra. I felt like such a drug-smuggling rebel. XD

I remember my parents having to fight with the principal so I could be allowed to carry my inhaler with me in high school, even though I'd been hospitalized for asthma in junior high and twice had to go home early from school for asthma attacks. Having it in the nurse's office was no help because either I would have to go to the office during class and miss things, or stop by at lunch time and she's on lunch too so no one could get it for me. And it wasn't like I was going to be sharing my /life-saving medication/ with other people so they could get high off asthma meds or whatever.

In my middle school, each grade was divided into teams. So for instance, if you were in sixth grade, you were in team 6A, 6B, 6C, etc. Only kids in the same "team" could eat lunch together, and even then, you had to pick what table you ate lunch with by the second week of school. Supposedly to manage overcrowding. And you got a warning if you broke the rule.

I think this made it even harder to make friends, TBH. I never had anyone to eat lunch with, because I could never eat with kids I actually knew.

Wow, that seems like a REALLY weird rule. I wonder if they still do this? It seems like an incredibly wrong-headed way to manage overcrowding.

We also had teams. I remember being on the Tiger Team in seventh grade and the Vanguard team in 8th grade, and each team had their main teachers: math, science, Social Studies and English and same for lunch, but we never had assigned tables.

In elementary school, we weren't allowed to hang out in groups larger than three because "it encouraged bullying". In middle school, no Yu-Gi-Oh cards because they "encouraged gambling".

My elementary school had the no cards rule too. No Yu-Gi-Oh cards, no Pokémon, no Digimon, etc. Hell, pogs completely vanished from my childhood because of that stupid rule.

Bandanas were not allowed because they were gang symbols. I didn't know about the rule until a teacher told me to take off a bandana I had tied over my head because I was having a bad hair day. The bandana was pink and had the Barbie logo on it (I wore it ~*ironically*~). Despite the fact that absolutely no one was going to seriously think I was announcing my gang membership with that bandana, I took it off without argument. Still, I like imagining that somewhere out there was a gang that chose pink Barbie bandanas as their symbol.

My high school actually frowned on all head coverings that were not of religious or cultural significance, so baseball caps, knit caps, and so forth were not allowed indoors.

My elementary-high school was a religious school. So fairly strict dress code that really only applied for girls except that boys couldn't have piercings or hair below their ears. You could get in trouble for "inappropriate books" (once got in trouble for reading something I found in the school library). What little sex ed we did have always separated boys and girls. Girls couldn't do anything that might be interpreted as "tempting" boys. Any student leadership position was only for boys.

I hated my school so much even then.

Not my whole school, but one teacher I had wouldn't let us say the word "suck." At all. Even if we were talking about literal sucking of the non-sexual kind, like the fish in the class fishtank that sucked the side of the glass. She'd give us a detention mark if we called it an algae sucker. It was bizarre.

There was a teacher at my high school who didn't allow saying "suck" either. I never had him for a class, but some of my friends did and they took to saying "That vacuums!" instead of "That sucks!"

My fifth grade teacher once scolded a boy for using the word nasty. It confused me for years until I learned that older people used nasty for "sexual" instead of "yucky."

No pagers or cell phones.

"They're for gangsters and drug dealers"

Dear Mr Principal Dude,
We are rural school served by 1 town, 2 villages, 3 hamlets, and countless farms. We have no gangs unless you count Leafs vs Wings sports rivalry.

Maybe the drug dealers bits were true, but the drug dealers I knew didn't have cell phones either. It was the early 2000s, 3/4 of the school still had dial-up internet and lived outside of areas with cell reception.

I think you went to my high school. I can't remember if we had a no pager/no cell phone rule though.

Well if it was rural southwestern Ontario, south of London then maybe.

Oh god I am terrible with directions. Rural Southwestern Ontario, Simcoe County.

My favourite joy was the last couple months of school and it was open the windows and die of manure smell or close the windows and suffocate and die of heat. Such options!

I suspect some of my bathroom phobia was because there were no doors on the stalls.

I think it was an anti-drug thing.
