Good Netflix shows that fly under the radar...

(Anonymous) 2018-01-06 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
So in other words, NOT stuff like Stranger Things, anything Marvel, The Crown, Orange Is the New Black, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt or any previously popular shows/movies that are now on Netflix. What good shows do you like that aren't getting as much buzz?

Santa Clarita Diet. Really loved it and I am surprised it didn't get that much press.

My favorite movie (other than Okja which got a lot of press) was The Little Prince. It was such a gorgeous movie with an excellent story.

They're not originals, but I'd like to rec Intelligence - a Canadian spy show set in Vancouver about local gangs and the Vancouver Organized Crime Unit. Very well done, great acting and a slow burner. Unfortunately, it's been cancelled and the ending is somewhat abrupt. :(

Also, Travelers where time travelers from a post-apocalyptic future are sent on missions back in time to the present day to try and save the world. It's low budget sci-fi done well, IMO. Good ensemble cast with plenty of shipping possibilities.

I heard nothing about Bright until someone on plurk mentioned watching it. Gave it a shot. Holy shit it's great. The critics are wrong.

granted it's a movie, not a series, but still. I heard rumor they're already making a sequel so there you go.

I have this on my computer to watch because the idea sounded so cool. Now I'm definitely going to watch it soon. Thanks, anon.

The sequel also doesn't have Max Landis involved, which can only be a good thing.

There's going to be a sequel to Bright?

Hrmmmm.

I didn't really enjoy Bright at all. Maybe the second one will be better.

I liked it. Not sure I'd have paid to go see it but it was fun for what it was. And I liked the elves in it.

Bright had some flaws that, imo, were pretty glaring. But it also had some really good aspects. Overall I found it enjoyable. I wouldn't call it great by a long shot, but I definitely think it was way better than the majority of critics have made it out to be.

Late, but AMERICAN VANDAL. WATCH THIS SHOW. IT MIGHT BE ONE OF THE FUNNIEST THINGS I'VE EVER SEEN.

Don't know if it fits into your definition of 'previously popular show', but I think it fits the spirit of the thread - the One Day At a Time remake. The people who do talk about it are enthusiastic, but those are pretty rare, and mostly reviewers. It's a pity, too, because it's a fabulous series.

Does Dark count? I think most people are aware of it, but it doesn't seem to be getting super popular, either, despite being a really distinctive, interesting, tightly made show.

I'd say 90% of Dark's lack of popularity is down to it being German (meaning it has subtitles and a lack of any remotely recognizable actors). S1 was really solid, I thought. Very challenging to follow along with, but in a good way. I have my doubts that the narrative will be able to sustain itself in the long run, but S1 was a good watch.

They have Star Trek: TOS.

Got sucked into Shetland, which I didn't hear any buzz about.

GLOW kind of flew under the radar.

I think they have all the Star Trek shows (except Discovery), just not the movies.

... and you think Star Trek: TOS is one of those shows that few people know about, huh?

I really liked Alias Grace, but that one is definitely more niche.

I also really liked GLOW

Ohh, Alias Grace is on netflix? I never keep up with these things. I'll definitely be watching that.

I'll definitely second "Alias Grace". I don't normally binge-watch short series, but I couldn't stop. Got me, hook, line, and sinker.

Part of me is glad it got all wrapped up properly, while the other part of me wants more just because I liked it!
